Lightroom 4.2: Adding "Comments" in Library mode (or not)

Hi
Should users be able to add comments to the very bottom of the RHS panel? My version 4.2RC says "selected service does not support comments" so why is there a comments panel then?! or am I missing something?!

Thanks in advance

Those comments are for the more "elite" publishing services only. I could speculate why they aren't hidden when there are no such publishing services, but not sure how valuable such speculation would be.

If you want to add comments without bastardizing an existing IPTC field, consider custom metadata, e.g.

* BigNote
* CustomMetadata

Whoever wrote the publish service needs to hook up the right stuff to enable that panel.

Ahh, I was presuming it was a way to add my own notes to an image in Lightroom? But from your comments it appears to be linked to some external service?

Two questions:
So whats the best way to private notes to an image?
And what kind of publish service is this panel actually for then?

thanks in advance

Often times, if the publish service supports a comment, the plugin author will have it wired up. But, many publish services do not support such comments. Certainly, the hard-disk publish service does not support it. So, first question is: "is it supported by the service"? If so, contact the plugin author if it's not "wired up". If not, one could contact the publish service provider to request comment feature.

Dunno if Adobe has considered hiding comment in case no publishing services are set up that support it. It is confusing - says "selected service does not support comments", but there is *no* selected service.

If all you want is a scratch-pad for photo notes, consider the exif field:

'User Comment'

Requires 'EXIF', 'EXIF and IPTC', or appropriate custom metadata viewing preset.

It is for, well, user comments.., and enjoys native support in Lightroom - i.e. no plugin required.

To be clear, it *will* be in exported files, if you have "All.." metadata option selected, *unless* you use Jeffrey Friedl's Metadata Wrangler to strip it out.

If you want to assure notes stay private (aren't ever possibly exported), then definitely consider one of the plugins (mentioned in my first post above) instead.
