This conversation has been merged. Please reference the main conversation: Lightroom: Sorting and filter in import dialog

Please... add to sort at import "sort by file type" or "sort by file extension".

I often shoot both raw and jpg because I have an immediate need for jpg when working on a laptop on a location shoot, but also need the raw files for further editing and use in different media. I'd like to be able to import just the jpgs to the laptop on location (for printing or to create low res proofs for the client), then import the raw files when I'm back at the studio for processing out for other media/purposes. Thank you.

Agreed. I just found myself in need of this. I only wanted to import the RAW files from a folder where I had already worked some of the files in another version of the program and didn't want to import PSD and TIF files.

I had to import them all, sort by file extension and then remove the ones I didn't want from the Library.

I also don't understand the difference within the Library module itself between file type and file extension. I would have thought that RAW files, and TIF or jpeg files would be different file types.

Wouldn't it be easier if LR gave you the option to select which files to import using a filename mask and defaulted to everything? For example, RAW files or JPEG/TIF/GIF, etc files or Photoshop files (PSD, etc) or all files.

Similar to how almost every other application behaves...

perhaps, but then upgrades would be necessary every time a new format was presented. An alpha sort of extensions would work to separate file formats, regardless of compatibility.

Import by file type is what I need. I import hundreds of raw files interspersed with jpegs. I want the jpegs for preview purposes (on a tablet as an example) but I don't want to import them into LR. Individually selecting or deselecting files not contiguously displayed is torturous.
