Add a global search / command window.

Description:
The user would press a keyboard shortcut to bring up a small modal search window. This search window would list all commands / effects in alphabetical order. As the user types, the list would be refined to only show commands starting with the inputted letter(s). The user can press enter to initiate the nearest matched command or scroll through the list with up and down keys, scroll wheel or mouse to select from the list of commands. Once the command is initiated any modal window necessary for entry of the specific command parameters will appear as usual.

User Benefit:
A searchable command window will save users time and effort, promotes discovery of commands and makes it easier to find commands that may be hidden in menus / submenus.

Examples:
Blender 3d (press spacebar)
The command window in many CAD applications (such as Rhino 3D)
OSX spotlight
To a smaller extent the After Effects effects and preset search palette.

Are you aware that Configurator has offered the possibility for creating Panels with a search field since version 1 (for CS4)?

While this does not fully fit your wishes it might be useful for you.
