Photoshop: Actions - Command not currently available

I can't run actions. A popup window is telling me: THE COMMAND "x" IS NOT CURRENTLY AVAILABLE. I've bought Modern Art 3 action and I was anxious to see the wonderful results it could give me, but it doesn't work. I thought it was only this one, but trying others, the same thing occurs: some steps are done, but most of them not.

That means that some precondition required by the action is not being met.
Like if the action requires a selection and you don't have anything selected, or only works on a layer and you target a background, etc.

Check the actions themselves for instructions, or check the site where you downloaded the actions from.

Also, which version of Photoshop are you using?

The Modern Art 3 action mentioned in the original post requires a brush layer above the photo layer called "brush" so if you're trying to run the action on just a photo layer it won't work.

All this is outlined in this support document:

I am trying to run a preset action available in Photoshop cc2015. I've opened each step, One still will not run!
TO BE SPECIFIC:
it's the ripple command in the REFLECTION action.
I've tried to apply Ripple to the layer separately...and it...gee,...I CAN'T SELECT IT.

Do you mean the Water Reflection (type) action?
If so, did you select a type layer before running the action?

The action works just fine for me, if I select a type layer to run it on.

Well, I ran the action like a debugger with the history window open. Whatever was messing up the flow of the action I unclicked. It turns out I recorded some unnecessary stuff in the action.

I am using photoshop cc when I use export>layers to files sometimes it works sometimes it says this:

There is no difference in the way the files are set up originally for the times when this action works and when it doesn't. I have to keep restarting the program. It's not good and I can't find and answer online to this issue.

You say the problem is intermittent. If quit, restart Photoshop, and run File > Export > Layers To Files... a number of times (without doing anything else) does it always eventually fail. Or are you doing other commands in Photoshop before it fails?

always eventually fails. If I quit re open I can use the command once or twice maybe and then try and use a third time, it fails. I do nothing in between other then open files in photoshop.

hi
I had the same issue. Might be a coincidence but I had my background layer locked, which I then unlocked and ran the 'File > Export > Layers to Files' again and the export worked.

I have the same issue, only thing I'm doing, is deleting the files from the folder that I exported to  the first time around.
So when I go to re-export to the same folder, it initially redirects my export to the .trash folder (because that's where the last export files got put).
Photoshop will start the process of export but stops the second layer into export, and give the error. I will end up with three versions of the same file open in photoshop (usually on a completed export photoshop opens the files, exports them, and closes back to the original file).
Having to restart photoshop each time - time wasting.

>  sandstorm  exporter after sandstorm action>

Are you talking about a commercial action, such as those at graphicriver? I know some there are called Sandstorm, and many actions there are motion kit actions. If you're having a problem with one of them failing to complete, you need to get in touch with the author directly to help you troubleshoot. You can go to the product page for the action and leave a comment stating your OS and version of PS and the spot where the action is failing. In my experience, they do respond quickly, and often will take the discussion to private email in order to help you.

If you acquired the action from another site, I can't help with how to contact the author, but I'm sure the site itself has some mechanism.

I'm afraid it's virtually impossible for anyone here to troubleshoot a specific action that fails at any given step. Often the cause of the failure is much earlier than even the step right before the point of failure, and "If" doesn't give us very much to go by. It doesn't sound like there's anything wrong with the general function of CS6 itself.

Check what type of layer is selected. You can't run the 'Clouds' filter on a Text layer, a Shape layer or an Adjustment layer, for example.

If you attempt to run Clouds on a Shape or Text layer, it pops up a clear warning, plus it tells you what you can do about it in order to make the command available. If you attempt on an adjustment layer, it's simply grayed out unless you're on the mask.

Since the question comes under the heading Actions, I'm going to guess the Action stops and says the command is unavailable, and it may be that it isn't selecting the mask, or that the action failed to create the mask in the first place (I've seen that with photo actions) but your guess is as good as mine.  A screenshot would be most helpful.

Render Clouds is used by a great many photo art actions, and I have no difficulty with it running on any of my actions. However, that's not to say that some actions don't present difficulties if my file is not in a state the action needs, whether I've forgotten to be in 8 bit mode, RGB, have the right dimensions, with the right mask or other user-generated layer,  with all the other presets installed, brushes/tools in the right state, and have an image that can select enough based on earlier steps for a given step to act upon.

To troubleshoot 3rd party actions, you have to start at the beginning, making sure your image meets the minimum requirements of the action, including that you're running the correct version for your version of PS.  You'll only know if you have the right size and the right mask/object for the action by reading the notes and/or watching their demonstration video.

Once you're certain the image should produce the results you're looking for, step through the action one step at a time by Cmd/Ctrl-clicking on the Play button. If Fearless 2 is a 3rd party photo art action, you might have a few hundred steps, so you have to be very patient, but I know from experience what  step the action stops on and what message you get may have been determined by the results of the action several steps before. You may be able to get away with only going back in history a dozen or so steps and picking up from there with the play by play to find the culprit.

It's either you step through slowly and do your own troubleshooting, or you contact the author of the action and get that person to help with the aid of files and screenshots they will ask you to send them.

There's really nothing Adobe can do to make sure 3rd party actions run. In fact, I had a newly-published action that rarely ran  for anyone who commented— worked out where the problem was and a kludge that fixed it with manual intervention, and the author then took my results and rewrote the action properly so it never failed on any image after that, and without any manual intervention. These actions are often incredibly complex, and our images can foil the best of them at times.

> how to solve the command 'clouds'is not currently available...>

We'll need a lot more information about the state of your document, the layers you're on, what you're trying to do, etc. to figure that one out. Filter > Render> Clouds runs on just about anything typical, so it's impossible to say why it's not available for your particular file.

Can you tell us more about the action and perhaps show us a screen shot of your Layers that you're trying to export as files? As well as the version of PS and your OS?

If the action goes back a ways, Export Layers to Files moved from File> Automate (or Scripts—I can't remember which) to File > Export. It's possible the action is looking for the command in the wrong place.

The solution to this is to select the layer before you run your action. That is why the problem appears to be intermittent.

I set up an action to be able to batch resize photos to 6" x 4" @ 150dpi all of a sudden  I am getting the "Command not currently available".

I've used this action in the past and even deleted it and rerecorded a new action and still getting the same error. -

Using Bridge in PS 2015CC

Very frustrating because I have a few hundred photos to resize.

Thanks!

I think Kenny Bellew gave me the solution! Hopefully it will also apply to your issue. If this is really basic and obvious, then my apologies. (-: BEFORE you start to record your action, select the files you will be using. THEN record your action. If I selected my files as part of the recorded steps, then next time it was looking for THOSE specific file names every time the action ran ... AND it couldn't find them ... so, "select not currently available." That ensures that the action is correctly recorded so that the next time you run your action, all you have to do is select your files.
