ACR greyed out after 2015.1.1 update

Just updated Photoshop CC to 2015.1.1. and ACR is greyed out when I open an NEF file by double clicking it. I have to click anywhere on the ACR applet in order to "activate" it. This does not happen if I open Photoshop first, and launch an NEF via the File menu. This problem was not present before the update.

Has anyone else seen this behavior?

You might like to try downloading and installing the latest version of Camera Raw:

Thanks for responding James.

I installed ACR from your provided link but the problem still persists.

What OS version are you using?
ACR shouldn't be listed as an open option in the Finder/Explorer (though DNG converter should). And if the plugin installed, then Photoshop should have it available, and camera raw files should open in Photoshop or Lightroom.

Windows 10 64bit.

ACR does open in Photoshop & Lightroom, that's not the problem.

All of the ACR adjustment options are grayed out when I open an NEF by clicking its icon. I have to click on the ACR applet in order to enable the adjustments.

If I open an NEF photo via the file menu then ACR launches with all adjustment options ready to go (not grayed out)

Before I updated to 2015.1.1 this did not happen,

Double check what version of Photoshop you are launching when you double click the file. You might be launching an older version, or a duplicate copy (like from a backup disk).

Below info is from the "About" screen. Photoshop CC was updated thru The CC desktop app.

Release 2015.1.1

20151209.r.327 x 64

BTW, thanks for your help on this.

So you've got the latest version of Photoshop.
It still sounds odd that you get different behavior from a double click and from File->Open ...

Update:

As a test, I restored a disk image taken before Photoshop update 2015.1.1. The restored version was 2015.0.1. I double clicked an NEF file and it opened in ACR with all options available - nothing was grayed out.

I again update Photoshop to 2015.1.1 and the problem was immediately back.

I then uninstalled Photoshop CC 2015.1.1, rebooted, Re-installed Photoshop 2015.1.1 and the problem is still there.

There is definitely something wrong with the 2015.1.1 update.

Update #2.

ACR behaves normally (not grayed out on launch with NEF file) if the setting "Load Extension Panels" In “Preferences\Plug-Ins” is unchecked.

Can anyone else reproduce this?

Steps for Photoshop CC 2015 version 2015.1.1

1. Make sure "Load Extension Panels" IS checked in Preferences\Plug-Ins (default).

2. With Photoshop closed, double click to open an NEF file in ACR and notice if ACR's adjustments are greyed out.

3. If they are greyed out then UNCHECK "Load Extension Panels", close Photoshop, and repeat step 2 to check ACR's adjustments again.

I would greatly appreciate it if someone would give this a try.

One other thing I noticed is that Photoshop version 2015.0.1 opened in 2 to 3 seconds when launched by the programs executable, with 2015.1.1 it takes about 7 seconds. Definitely slower but I can live with that.

What third party extension panels are you loading?
That sounds like one of your extension panels is intercepting events incorrectly.

Don't have a clue what is loading. I have never loaded any plug-ins or extension panels into Photoshop. The program is as it was installed.

How can I tell what is loading, is there a list?

Instead of posting the entire (rather long) log I'll post what is probably relevant. The following 4 lines were at the bottom of the System Info log.

Optional and third party plug-ins: NONE

Plug-ins that failed to load: NONE

Extensions: NONE

Installed TWAIN devices: NONE

Nope, not at all. It's all working as expected for me.

I have been having this same problem with .CR2 files - as well as the said file taking an age afterward to sharpen up. (pre making adjustments).
I have unchecked the load extensions panel and now all seems to be well.
I don't really know what it does but the ACR controls are no longer greyed out and images are opening up and sharpening much quicker.
Thanks for the info.

Thanks for the input Steve.

PS does indeed open & run slower after the update so I have reverted back to version 2015.0.1. for now, awaiting an Adobe "fix" (if there is one).
