Photoshop: Ability to pause a selection while using the polygonal lasso tool.

When using the Polygonal Lasso Tool, I often have to do detailed selections that take multiple minutes. Currently, there is no way I know of to just pause the selection, other than just closing the selection and then adding to it later.

When I get a message from someone on my PC's chat window, I want to be able to view it or reply to it, without having to close my selection. It would be nice to be able to temporarily pause the selection. Or at least have the option to record (in the History) every point/click I that when/if I do close my selection, I can always undo one step and go back to where I left off.

The latter would be very beneficial for times when I accidentally close a selection (usually my computer's fault), and it ends up getting all messed up due to intersecting with itself. There is no way to undo that, without undoing the entire selection. If I could just undo the one "selection close" step, I would like to be able to have my cursor pick up where it left off in mid-selection prior to closing.

Easier said than done, I'm sure, particularly because of issues that could arise with cursor placement after you undo the close, but...
