Photoshop: Why is my selected layer red layer in layers panel instead of gray?

Photoshop CC 2017: On one photo only, the "selected layer" in the layers panel is red, not gray, like on all other photos. Does this indicate a problem? What can I do about it?

Hi Larry,

If it looks like the image below of the Layers Panel, then you've entered into Quick Mask Mode. You can toggle in and out of this mode with the (Q) keyboard shortcut. When entering this mode, the layer selection on the layers panel switches to red.

Silly story...my initial reaction when this happen to me was theres not enough disc space for photoshop data and my drive was full so I went on a computer cleaning spree (which was probably good) only to find out that simply pressing 'Q' on the keyboard removed the red highlighted layer and random red highlight on my image
