Lightroom: "there was an error working with this photo" after pasting crop settings

I can consistently completely screw up the Lightroom Catalog and get photos flagged with "there was an error working with this photo" after syncing cropping information. Once photos are flagged like this, there is no fixing them within Lightroom, except for removing them from the catalog, and then re-importing them back in (not sure what is going on with this part, because I would think if I revert back the history, or paste working settings back to it, it should fix it, but it doesn't).

A screen capture of this behaviour is as follows:

What I'm trying to do is capture a single column of pixels from each photo (why isn't import). So what I did was set the aspect ratio to 1 x the number of pixels in height - meaning when it is applied to the image, we're down to a single column width.

When I paste this across the rest of the photos (with the same image size), it will generally make all of the other images "there was an error working with this photo". Occassionally it seems to work for the first image. If I manually applied these settings to each photo, it actually works, so not sure what is going wrong with the pasting process?

I appreciate that this isn't really an everyday use scenario for people, but it does highlight that something is going wrong through this process, and further, there is no recovering from it, even if you step back in the develop history, or re-sync with a normal crop settings. It also highlights a difference in behaviour between manually changing the settings on a photo by photo basis, versus syncing settings in bulk.
