Camera Raw and DNG: Provide 64-Bit version of the DNG Converter for Windows

My testing on an 8 core system running Windows 7 x64 revealed that the 64 bit build of Camera Raw (6.5) will complete the conversion of a group of Canon CR2 raw files to DNG in almost half the time the 32 bit Camera Raw or the 32 bit DNG Converter takes.

Times to do 40 conversions of the same set of Canon EOS 40D CR2 files to DNG format:

- DNG Converter (32 bit): 56 seconds
- Camera Raw 32 bit: 55 seconds
- Camera Raw 64 bit: 33 seconds

It looked as though the 64 bit software was keeping more of the cores busy more of the time.

Given that the 64 bit build of Camera Raw seems to be so much more efficient, and making a leap in assuming a 64 bit build of the DNG Converter would reap similar gains over the 32 bit version....

Any plans to build a 64 bit DNG converter to cut the wait time nearly in half for folks with 64 bit Windows?

I think that kind of performance gain would be well-received.

Thanks.

And to answer the obvious questions ahead of time:

Yes, all the settings were the same.

Not sure why a Question and Idea are logically separated here, but it's been implied that a Question might not provoke a software change, where an Idea might...

Indications are that a 64 bit DNG Converter build would just about double the performance of that seen from the 32 bit app. Half the time to convert the same number of images would be nice.

Same old same old...

Various timings for 50 Raw Canon 40D images converted to DNG:

106.4 seconds - Free DNG Converter 7.1 (32 bit).

72.4 seconds - Camera Raw 7.0 with Photoshop CS6 x64.
100.0 seconds - Camera Raw 7.0 with Photoshop CS6 32 bit.

78.8 seconds - Camera Raw 7.1 with Photoshop CS6 x64.
116.2 seconds - Camera Raw 7.1 with Photoshop CS6 32 bit.

Hey Adobe,

How about fixing this issue some day?  Mac version has been 64bit for ages now, Windows version of Adobe DNG Converter 10.0 is still 32bit and twice as slow.
