If i define pattern or brushes and then if photoshop crashes for whatever reason or there is a power failure the patterns and brushes won't be saved :(
(you can simulate it by defining a pattern then end process photoshop.exe. Your pattern won't be there when you come back)

It would be nice if they were saved upon creation... not upon exiting Photoshop (as I suspect it is now)

Correct -- patterns are saved along with preferences when Photoshop quits.
If you crash, then preferences don't get saved.
But you can choose to save presets to a file at any time.

But it also sounds like you have a bigger issue: why is Photoshop crashing so often on your machine? Photoshop is normally quite stable, but can crash often if there is an external factor (third party plugin, device driver, etc.) with significant bugs in it.
First, make sure that Photoshop is up to date. And make sure that all device drivers are up to date. Then try disabling any third party plugins you have loaded.

my nvidia display driver is crashing/failing often which results in photoshop crashing as well and I don't turn off my photoshop for days or restart the pc so any custom patterns are gone. But thanks replying. I'll update the drivers and see if that helps
