"Convert to smart object" renders text ugly

I use Photoshop CC. When I convert a whole group (a folder) to a smart object (right clicking on that group in the layers panel and choosing 'Convert to smart object'), the text in that group renders all ugly. This seems to be caused by Photoshop's "Blend Text Colors Using Gamma" setting. By default text layers are rendered slightly lighter than other layers but this distinction gets lost when everything is flattened into a single Smart Object, hence the darker text.
