Lightroom: .3gp movie files become corrupt in Lightroom 4 beta

I've found the .3gp movie files become corrupt once accessed with Lightroom 4. It is able to slide through them OK in the filmstrip, Geotag, keyeword etc, but won't play them. After this, they are no longer playable through media player, etc as well.

After this, lightroom shows a preview but says there was an error working with the photo.

thanks.

As an extra to this, I have Lightroom set to automatically save Metatags to files.

Hi Richard, thanks for the report and sorry to hear about the corruption. Would it be possible to get hold of one of those files (ideally after corruption and an uncorrupted backup) for QE to examine please? You can use www.yousendit.com to send it to victoria@lightroomqueen.com or drop it on my server (www.vbftp.net, username webupload, password 123). Thanks!

I've been doing more playing with this, and I can't work out what is happening. To me it seems that there is either an inherent issue with the .3gp format, or metadata conflicts between what lightroom and other programs, such as Windows live are adding to them. It seems that if I change the file name of the movie (even in explorer) it will go corrupt either straight away or after further changes to it's metadata . Haven't yet had it happen to the original name file.

Anyway, I've had enough and am going to overcome it be converting to another format as I've experienced no issues with any other movie formats as yet.

These files came from a HTC phone.

thanks
Richard

OK. It doesn't seem to be Lightroom causing the issue. I can replicate the bug reasonable constantly now and seems to be coming from Windows live Photo Gallery. If a .3gp file is assigned a caption and a people tag then it becomes corrupt (about 90-95% of the time). I suspect it is not updating the metadata correctly and damaging the header for the file.

Just happened that I start playing with the new phone the same time I installed the Beta for lightroom and this was were they were seeing to become corrupt. Any changes with Lightroom don't affect the file, though I'm not sure if it is actually writing anything to the file anyway. It says it is if I try to exit straight after updating a field, but nothing shows up when I look at the file with ExifTool. (I have the program set to automatically write out changes).

Thankyou Victoria, for you quick followup to this.

Cheers
Richard
