Photoshop Elements: How do I open raw files from Bridge so they're 300ppi (not 240ppi) (PSE 8 Mac)

I have PSE 8 and use Adobe Bridge and Photo Downloader. It automatically imports all my RAW pictures at 240 ppi. I want 300 ppi. I've looked through everything pertaining to my camera (Canon Rebel Ti1), Bridge, and Downloader and can't find a way for it to automatically download at 300 ppi. Even when I try to convert a whole folder of pictures in Bridge to 300 ppi - if I close it and come back to it later the unprocessed ones are back at 240 ppi! I'm going nuts! Can you offer a solution to this?

In Camera RAW, click the line at the bottom of the window that shows the size, color profile, and resolution that the image will be opened with. Then change the settings to what you prefer.

Also, why do you need them at 300 ppi? The number of pixels will be the same, regardless of the resolution? Is this needed to work with some other application (page layout for instance)?
