16 Bit Brushes

When creating brushes for Photoshop, the brush shape can have a higher bit-depth than 8 bit. This makes a lot of sense when you want your brush-shapes to have smooth transitions and crisp but not pixellated edges.

I have been wondering though, how much more strain will this put on the system and, even more importantly: will a brush texture created in 16bit-depth have a different appearance when used in an ordinary 8-bit file?

Or would a 16bit brush only really make a difference as long as you use it with a file that can take its whole range?
