"Selection > Select and Mask" doesn't select fine pixels any more, even not in the tutorial sheets of Adobe. Last version was and Lightroom (mask color or luminance) is much better.

One problem more, that makes me think about changing to another application.

This is just the first step. Use the Refine Edge Brush on the left to isolate these areas.

Really? Your second screenshot looks quite different (and better) than the first one.

This looks like, because I did not substract. Have a look on the hairs at their lighted end and on the transparent end of the dress on the lower right

Your post here is very confusing.
You're using a smart radius of 3px on what looks to be a fairly small image... what does the mask look like when you disable those settings?

Thanks for your engagement.
The pic was furnished by Adobe in their tutorial "Mit Leichtigkeit zum Erfolg.". Believe me, I tried with and without smart radius resp using Refine Edge Brush. The difference between the two pictures shows, that there is better ways then the ones in "select and mask". The new screenshot made with PS 18 shows the differences even better. The limits are more accurate and fine. I only use "select color" only once.
I really think PS should become better in  "Selection > Select and Mask". F ex in LR you can mask using colors or lightness ...

I100% agree with you about improvements to select and mask, but remember that using other tools is always an option when one doesn't do what you need.
There are many, many other tools in Ps for making detailed selections and i use them almost every day.
