"Import photos" opens a device, if one is attached. Sometimes resulting in a crash.

In detail:
Windows 7 Pro, 32 Bit.
When one clicks on "Import photos" in the Library module (this is present in 3.x, 4.x, and I've tested up to 5.6), if a device is attached, that is the default choice for the location. This is a bad, non-ergonomic choice for some people, and there is no option to change that default.
There are two problems with that:
1. If a cell phone is attached via USB and is busy doing something else, LR cannot read the file system, and that results in LR hanging for a while, and then LR crashing (closing).
2. My (and for some other people) workflow is to copy photos to an HDD first within the OS, and then import them into LR. This is much faster, especially if previews are generated. If no device is attached or SD card is inserted, LR comes to my last place of import, and that's very convenient. If a phone is attached or an SD card is inserted, LR goes to that location, and then, to open my regular location, I need to go through the directory tree, which is very non-ergonomic.
I understand that some people import straight from the devices/cards, but this should be made configurable for others.

Addition to the description of the problem:
The crash is observed when a cell phone attached has MANY images and videos (in my case it is about 2500 just in DCIM/camera, and a bunch more in other folders.
