Where did the Extract filter go in Photoshop CS5?

If you are looking for the Extract Tool forget it. Adobe removed it because it was getting lots of complaints i think. It`s in CS4 Photoshop,because i have got the two. I am in the same boat as you i to am looking for a good tutorial on the Refine Edge Tool. I know what you mean when you say SO little time. I am 63 yrs old and what annoys me is these video`s,with some of the names you have mentioned slavering on with things that has got nothing to do with the topic.
One tutor was trying to tell you how to pronounce Wacom,that wasted about 5 minutes of video.

I hear you man! I bit the bullet and bought Matt's "famous" book on composting. (I have a small how-to book addiction)...hoping the first few chapters will illuminate the refine edge tool for me. I say the first few chapters because the rest of the book is overstuffed with filler of here's my cool composites ad-infinitum. Typical Kelby padding the 24 hour photoshop hype cycle. Plus the book while printed domestically is printed on really thin paper and the ink bleeds through, so the color is whacked. They must be really bummed....Anyway heres to hoping Matt can shed some light on m inability to bond with the Re-Find the Edge tool.

The Extract tool was just a bad idea in the first place. Poor masking, poor dialog based implementation. It was the kind of feature dreamed up by someone with no in depth knowledge of Photoshop. Who as a result most probably shouldn't have been employed at Adobe in the fist place.

i am spoiled by the extratc tool. i had a computer for a long time, and the also has cs3 until that coomputer broke.
now, i jusy purchased a new computer, i haves cs6, and i have read, and read, but the first step , in the refine edge command=( take a minute and outline with the quick selection tool ) i cant get it right.
this method, goes on and on, it had many steps, and the teaching dialog gets more brief and less explanation until i am totally at a loss.
i wish i had cs3, i would use it just for the extract purpose.
unfortunately, even though i was using cs3, it was stolen from my apartment when i was in the hospital having a mastectomy.
the other option- the background eraser tool- starts out easy, no other comments!!! i can use it, but suddenly, it stops working!
i am doing art now, for 3 years, without the aid of extraction. i had to resort to digital darkroom...
i really want to learn how to extract, ...
better yet... i want to have the extract tool back.
question.................what would be involved in getting the extract tool put into my
sc6? is it possible?
who knows the answer to this?

I am sorry but you will not find the extract tool.
Adobe ditched it for some reason,but the Background Eraser Tool should work ok.
In short the Extract Filter does not exist any more,but the Refine Edge Tool does.
It`s not easy to use it?

Meredith...PLEASE record that little video. I find the refine edge tool so counter-intuitive that it makes me want to scream. I m willing for it to be user error but it is still really complex with its contingencies. Please share the love with me.

I think we met at the Adobe Photoshop Users group! ( I co coordinate with Dan Clark) Bert Monroy was the speaker, I was taking to Chris Cox and he introduced us...I hope this is you. I am still having the same problem, I want to get to know this tool desperately.(2 years now!) I did a screen grab but the universal "NO" symbol did not render in the screenshot. Grrr. It comes up instead of the tooltip live when I am trying to edit. I am using PSD5 on a MacPro. Snow leopard. Something is going on or set or something that does not want to let me use this tool. I tried dropping down from 16 bit to 8 but but alas no cigar. Could it be colorspace? I am stumped. Time to trash the prefs? I wonder if you will still get this. I am attaching photo at the bottom of this thread. Look at the fellows forehead. I had to shoot a photo off the screen to get this.

me too... I LOVED EXTRACT! it was my choice of tools for extracting anything from a background... I became VERY, VERY good at it...
