When I click Select and Mask, all the menus gray out.

If I save the document, the menus come back. In other words, Select and Mask is not working.

Is ‘Select & Mask’ itself not working, or are all menus greyed out when you work in Select & Mask? I am typing this on my iPad so I can’t check it, but I believe that greyed out menus are normal when you are in the Select & Mask dialog. That dialog has its own tools, sliders and buttons, and so the other Photoshop menus are not supposed to work at that time.

Select and Mask is not working and all menus except View and Windows are grayed out except a few in Select: All, Deselect, Inverse and Subject. In file the Open and Save commands are available.

OK, start by giving more information. Which version of Photoshop, which OS. Don't say 'latest version', give a number. Then describe what 'not working' means. What does (not) happen when you try to use it? Like I said, most menus are supposed to de dimmed when the Select & Mask window is present, so what you describe sounds completely normal.

Howdy Mike,

What Johan said --^

If you can describe step-by-step what you were doing, we have a WAY better chance of following your workflow and finding your issue.  Screenshots are also helpful.

Thanks,
David

Yes, of course! 19.1.2, OS 10.13.6. Select and Mask disappears. I can't do anything at all in the first 8 menus item except Deselect, All, Subject and Inverse under Select. I cna't even access About Photoshop CC.

Howdy Mike,

If there are reason that you don't update your application version?  Just a thought.  What you're seeing is REALLY unusual...  Try resetting as Johan suggested.

Thanks,
David

I just updated PS. No change. Also resetting prefs had no effect.

Hey Mike,

Sounds like you have something really wrong with your setup.  Would you be up to do a web-hosted screenshare with me to get to the bottom of it?  All you need is a network connection and a phone line (so we can have an independent communication channel -- I can call you so there's no cost).  This would allow me to see what you're seeing in real time and try a few different things to fix your problem.

Let me know,
Thanks,
David

Yes, I could do that. Later today? Not much time next week until Friday.

The work flow is very simple. I simply make a selection. Click Select and Mask, Select and Mask disappears and the menus are greyed.I hit command S, then cancel the Save and the menus come back.

Like I said two times already: the menu behavior is perfectly normal. However, for some reason it seems that the Select & Mask interface is not showing. I noticed that your document is a smart object, so maybe try this again with a normal image just to see if that has anything to do with it (it shouldn't).

Tried again with a normal image. No difference. OK. I see you are right about the normal behavior. (Please excuse my obtusity!) It's just that Select and Mask does not show.

Try resetting the Photoshop preferences to see if that helps. https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/preferences.html

Resetting preferences did not help.

Then I'm out of ideas, except updating your version of Photoshop to the latest version, which is not 19.1.2 but 20.0.5.

Thanks for your efforts. I'm going to consult further with the Adobe rep. And I did update, but no improvement.
