Saving a Watermark Using the Custom Pattern feature

Photoshop allowed me to save a custom PATTERN for a watermark but not a custom BRUSH as suggested in the tutorials. Is there any difference? Also when saving the file as a PSE what's the best way to compress it to save disc space? My professional printer suggests I save it as a TIF. I have over 1000 photos to watermark, and I'm concerned about space.
