Radical color shift when flattening/merging image with a Color Lookup layer layer

Sometimes when I am working with images with a Color Lookup layer, when I run an action that includes a step to Flatten the image, the colors change radically. I tried changing the Flatten step to a Merge Down, it keeps the colors...except, if the next step is a sharpen, they still shift. If I go back and review the action steps, the Merge Down also changes the colors, but if I go back to the beginning, and just manually Merge Down, the color do not shift! If I then Sharpen (Smart Sharpen), they do shift, but if I undo the Smart Sharpen step, the colors are still shifted.

 


I am a bit stumped, as I cannot see why sometimes Flattening/Merging the image changes the colors, while most times it does not. I also can’t figure out why undoing the last step does not totally undo the step- undoing a sharpen step leaves the color changed when I would expect it to return the color to what it was before that step.

Try doing  copy merged instead.  If I remember correctly, flattening and merging don't always apply the adjustments in the flatten or merge process (even though you would think that it would).

Copy Merged is grayed out.  If I Select All on image itself, I can apply that menu item, but then when I tried pasting back into document, resulting layer had color shifted as well. Not sure I am using that command properly?

I also tried creating a new layer from merge- Command + Option + Shift + E, but it also shifts colors...

I think I figured out what is happening- I was viewing images at 50%, so I could see the whole image on my 27" iMac, but if I zoom in to 100%, the image goes from the top version to the bottom version. I always zoom in to do detail work, judge sharpness, etc, but when just manipulating an image overall, I can't do that at 100% as I loose ability to see what is happening to 3/4 of the image.

Most of the time, it doesn't matter whether I view at half or full size, but with this image and its set of adjustment layers, for some reason when viewing it at less than the 100%, it changes image appearance radically. I wish Photoshop could show me what my image adjustments really look like- color wise- when viewing at 50%, so I do not create an image I love, then find out it is only a phantom caused by down sampling or something...
