Photoshop: Tiff: what does "Save Image Pyramid" do?

When "Save as" TIFF having been option "Save Image Pyramid". In manual: "Preserves multiresolution information. Photoshop does not provide options for opening multiresolution files; the image opens at the highest resolution within the file. However, Adobe InDesign and some image servers provide support for opening multiresolution formats."
But what is "multiresolution information"? And for what it needed?

Thank you!

It saves multiple 'previews' at different resolutions that other applications can access to improve performance.
