Solved

Photoshop: Slow to open PDF files.

Every first time i try to open and rasterize a pdf file in photoshop, there are 4 phases :

- first, the open pdf dialog opens quite fast and shows the thumbnails
- then there's a huge lag, like photoshop is stuck for 10 seconds minimum (never took time to count), nothing happens
- then photoshop wakes up again and i can select wether pdf pages or images
- i rasterize normal speed.

If i do it again, then i have no more delay, which, to me relates to starting some routine for pdf opening in background (even when i restart photoshop, no more delay, only on a fresh computer/session start)

What's really bothering is the moment it takes place : after i see some of the pages/images and before i can select them.

Is there some possibility to make that process happen after, when i validate the pdf process, (before, just on opening, is not a good solution, sometimes, i'll open the wrong pdf). Or some way to have the process asynchronous, like, starting in the background, and when it's ready, then i have access to my conversion.

Which version of Photoshop are you using? Have you installed all the updates?

Which OS version are you using?

How large are these PDF files? What do they contain?

Hi Chris. This is Photoshop CS6 via Creative Cloud subscription, so i got all the required updates i guess (13.1.2)
Os is Mac Os X 10.7.5

PDF files, whatever the sizes, sometimes one page, sometimes multiple pages. Sometimes i want to raster the pages, sometimes i want to extract the visuals inside. Really different ways of using.

And, sorry, this problem annoys me from times to times (i dont raster pdfs on a daily basis...), and everytime i post-pone this question :)

I'll restart tomorrow and make a screen record so you can see the problem, and maybe a memory/activity sample

We're not seeing it go that slowly in our testing. So there is either something different about your system, or about the files you are rasterizing. We need to figure out the differences so we can narrow down the possible causes.

Yep. I did a restart, fesh photoshop, no problem opening pdf file. Soooo frustrating... I'm tryng with big heavy pdfs, many pages, images, even layers... Now it's working. But it's not the first time i have Ps lag...Except... Can't reproduce...

OK, so something you were running, or some state of the system caused the slowdown. That could be system paging (due to too many apps using too much RAM), or the OS font services (especially corrupt OS font caches), another application, a utility, etc.

I have been having the same problem since upgarding to Photoshop CC - there is a stream of complaints on this same issue on the forum and no response over the last 3 years about it from Adobe. Please guys - there is a clear issue here ...

Same problem. I have to force Photoshop to crash so I can at least use another app without having the windows of Photoshop asking me the type of colour or size to rasterize I want which stills open like for ever.

Same issue! This is something I do daily and with virtually every design as I move to create digital versions of my Illustrator files in photoshop. This is costing me money and time.. this needs TO BE FIXED.

The only way i have found around this is to go edit - purge - all before opening the PDF - this works like 90% of the time. If purge is greyed out then i open a small PSD file, move something in the file and then purge all and close that file before opening the PDF. Only other fix is restarting photoshop before opening the PDF which is a pain.....

Can you provide a link to a PDF that is slow to open or causes Photoshop to hang?

Hi Jeffrey, I hate to say this, but there is no specific PDF. For my own case, it can be any PDF; I've tested it and it's even happened with single-page PDFs with just a tiny bit of test type. It happens with large, multi-page, image-heavy PDFs. When it happens, the delay time is the same for 50K or 150MB. Usually about 2 minutes for me or more. It happens when opening PDFs or when placing linked PDFs or replacing smart object content with a PDF. It's really unpredictable when / why it will happen. I try to pay attention but I have seen no pattern yet that indicates an answer as to cause or even circumstances that lead to it.

Hi Russ, that makes it sound like system specific issue rather than file/app version specific. I'd expect hundreds/thousands of reports if it were simply a problem PDF file I/O.

It may be permissions related or maybe a problem with specific fonts (or the local font cache).

Have you tried running in a new admin user account? Troubleshoot user permissions
Or any font troubleshooting? Troubleshoot fonts

I have several pdfs which are slow to load. If you need it, I can give you enough of it. Let me know how I can send it.
