And what should that detection be based on?

How do you define »skin tones«?
Luminance-wise they can cover pretty much the whole range and as for Hue and Saturation they can be vastly different depending on lighting conditions and processing.

Do you know another application or a plug-in that does perform a truly good selection of »skin tones« fully automatically?

Imagenomic Portraiture does a decent job.
Anyhow, it's not a simple task yet do able.

Color Range selection along with Face Detection + Feature Detection (Which all exists) could create a decent skin selection (At least Face Skin).

I have nightmares over this one, even when you use the Clone Stamp not at full opacity it`s lighter. The same goes for the Colour Picker. I picked a colour did one side then you would think it would be the same colour,no lighter. I don`t think there is a definition for skin tones. If you use the Colour Picker and go round the area of skin there are hundreds of colours.

The trick would be to incorporate 2 methods:
1. Selection based on color properties, as done now in "Color Range".
2. Face Recognition + Feature Recognition. Meaning Photoshop will detect the face and the features within it (Nose, eyes, etc...).

Using them both could achieve good skin selection.

Good idea!

Hosein - Talk about future versions of Photoshop isn't a good idea. Features which you may have heard 'leaks' about don't always end up in the final release. We don't want any wrong information being passed around.
