Photoshop: Single column marque is invisible when first added to an image

Photoshop 19.1.3 (Upgrade applied 28/04/2018)
Windows 10

I selected the Single column marque tool and clicked on my image.
I could not see the usual selection outline. It was not clear whether I had selected anything.
I then clicked on the Move tool the outline became visible.
This is the same for horizontal and vertical.

The rectangle and ellipse tools work normally.

This may help...  When my image is the right/wrond color my selection and brush toosl disappear.  I have found it wherever it is by pushing the space bar to bring up the hand/move indicator.

Sounds like a graphics card/driver issue. Is Use Graphics Processor disabled? If you enable it or disable it, restart Photoshop and try it again, does it work correctly?

Thanks for the  replies. A little more testing has shown that the issue is related to the size and magnification of the image. I opened a small jpg file 640 x 480 and the marque displays as expected. If I zoom in it still works. I then made the image 6000 pixels high and zoomed out to make it fit the screen. Then you cannot see the marque. If I zoom back to actual size I can see the marque displayed every time.
I tried this on a RAW file from my 5D with the same result.
My assumption is that when the image is shrunk to fit the screen PS doesn't display the marque because it is too narrow. Is this sensible behavior of  a defect?
BTW my screen resolution is 1920 x 1200.

It's not expected, but like I said it's probably related to the GPU. Did you try to disable it, restart Photoshop and try it again, does it work correctly?
