Photoshop: Replacement color doesn't work

Question

Got a PNG file with black graphic and white background and I want to replace the black with yellow and the white with purple. I am trying to use the color replacement tool. I have foreground color and set and as I drag over the image with circle and plus sign, nothing happens. I tried this in multiple versions of Photoshop and the tool just appears broken.

You might be misunderstanding what this operation is supposed to do. And Photoshop offers several non-destructive solutions for the task, for example a Gradient Map Adjustment Layer.

Black and white are not colors, that is why Replace Color does not work in your graphic.

Ah, that explains it. Thanks. I have another image which has some light brown color. I want to use the color replacement tool to change it to yellow, but when I do so, it replaces it with dim green instead of the specified yellow. Why?
