As far as I know, Refine Edge didn't change in the Photoshop 2015.1 update.
Have you double checked your settings for it?

the whole new masking tool is crap.

you changed it and not to the better. it is useless now.

there are dozend of threads here reporting the issues.... why is nobody at adobe fixing it?

we are on CC2017 now.. and it is still not fixed.

It doesn't just select outlying hair, it deselects already selected hair, and smears the area under the brush.

Me too ! as a CS5 user forced to upgrade to the CC version, no having the REFINE EDGE tool under "Polygonial Lasso" is slowing down my productivity enormously.  I am a photoeditor for a website and need to have something that works easily and effectively.

I'm at my wits end.

Having same problem! Frustrating!

Instead of picking up More detail out side of the marching ants it destroys the edge (creates voids and removes pixels) inside of the ants. When refine edge brush switched to erase refinement, it blurs everything it touches.
I have changed all of the settings until I am exhausted. I am now using my CS5 on an old computer and doing what I want only slower. I have compared the settings and my edge refinement is broken on the CC up date. I tried moving the marching ants away from the edge, Too far outside of the object and it got worse. I tried moving the ants well inside the borders of the object and it was slightly better.

Which OS version are you using?
And are you referring to Photoshop CC 2015.1, or a different update?

Can you show us an example of what you are referring to?

No , I am referring to a purchased program before CC rent to never own plan.

Chris -
You keep insisting that the customers send you examples - but

1. refine edge tool is not availale in as a funtion of the Lasso tools and clearly the masking tool is causing a great deal of pain.

2. This issue has been the subject of significant complaints and by now someone must have provided an im
age.  I get the feeling that this is just Adobe's way of mollifying the comlainer.
3.  There are enough complaints to warrent bringing back the old REFINE EDGE feature which worked very will - at least in CS5

Not sure it's in this thread but... The old refine edge is still in the new version. Make your selection, go to Select menu and click Select and mask while holding the shift key. Doing this will revert to the old working refine edge.

I have same problem with Refine edge. After i udate photoshop from 2015.0.1 to 2015.1 , probem starts with Refine edge. Refine edge was good in 2015.0.1 ver. Now it starts to delete white/black area. Sometimes other colour area. It happens with my friends also. i am useing windows 8 & windows 10. 4gb grapic, 32 gb RAM, 2 tb HD, 1920x1080 &1366x768 Display. I have more than 50 important images to edit. now i am stuck for this problem.

Same thing happened to me. This tool worked beautifully before updating. Now it is pretty much just a normal brush. Can I go back to the previous version? Really need this to work.

It may be helpful for us to see your settings in the the refine edge dialog, or possibly a video capture of your screen demoing the issue.

OMG are you kidding... Sorry I'm just really honked at you guys.  I'm a photoeditor for a website and have to produce a high volume of images daily - upgrading to CC is problematic in the first place - but losing the option of a working REFINE EDGE tool - and one easily accessible from the Lasso tool function has made this impossible to use.

And all you guys do is ask for examples.

Why don't you just bring back the feature that so many of us would like to use until you sort out the issues - real and otherwise - with the latest build?

Kurt, the old refine edge is still with you. Make a selection, go to the selection menu, while holding shift, click on select and mask.. the old refine edge opens

Not the exact same issue, but possibly related... quick selection has been a mess for a while now. If you use it with Auto-Enhance, it creates halo's/artifacts all along the interior and exterior of the mask. Not sure when the algorithm changed, but at least since CC14.

I just got off a one hour phone call with Adobe support. Reverted back to the previous version 2015.0.0, and the tool works as it did before.

you can use the old tool in CC2017 too.

go to the select menu. hold SHIFT and click on select and mask.

that will open the old tool.

and if anyone at adobe is interested in seeing the difference... just USE the tools.

some said the difference is because of the new tool using the GPU.
i don ́t know if that is true.

but i have a GTX 1080 and used 4-5 drives over the time.... and the new tool does not work.

a GTX 1080 is as good as 98% of the photoshop users will use.
so why is it not working correctly?
it is sure not because of not enough GPU power or driver issues!!
it is because of BAD CODING at adobe.

all their GPU enhanced features are just badly coded with lots of errors.
just look at lightroom, the GPU features are in desperate need to be fixed.

We have not made any changes to the Refine Edge feature. You may be running into a bug that we have not been able to reproduce here so far. For those with issues, were you refining a marching ant selection, or a layer mask? Did you try switching to different View Modes in the Refine edge dialog to see if that makes a difference? Does moving the edge detection Radius do the right thing?

Please let us know if your'e OK with us contacting you via email to get to the bottom of this. Thanks!

According to adobe, "select and mask," which comprises the refine edge tool now works off of the video card gpu instead of the PC's cpu. So it has been changed. The old refine edge worked great.

Question #1 - Could this bug be related to Windows 10? I am constantly haulted from working with interfering mesages from windows 10. Up grade, Sync? Back up! I used to be plagued with Want to buy an App.?

New subject:
I have been saving for a SSD and a new install of windows 7 pro 64bit.
If I do go back to Win 7, will I have problems with Photoshop CC

The problem is not windows 10. It is due to adobe switching select and mask to the GPU. Due to the fact that all GPU's are not the same nor are their drivers adobe has their hands full. The problem is present on Nvidia, AMD and intel cards.

Thanks for the reply. I am just too busy to deal with it now, and I am happily using the previous version. I did note, however, that the same problem occurred when I updated Photoshop on my brand new laptop, so that rules out a graphics card issue.

The only thing in common is a rather ancient Wacom Intuos2 tablet, which isn't supposed to work on either of these machines, as there is no compatible driver, but somehow I was able to save my settings. Could that have caused the problem due to some conflict with the update?

Entirely different issue, but may have some bearing... things get "stuck" to my pen in the layers pallet and also in the properties window. What I mean by that is that a layer that I have just renamed, for example, often follows the movement of my pen and that causes a change in the layer order. Similarly, when moving a point on a curve, the pen doesn't drop the point, but the point follows the pen outside of the properties window. I hope that makes sense and might be useful.

Hey Jeffrey,
I just saw this. Yes, I am. See my post below.

Yesterday, I updated to 2015.5.1, hoping for the best, but the refine edge tool in Select and Mask is still utterly useless. I watched Scott Kelby's video (about S and M) on YouTube and was very impressed with the task space and tools, until I looked closely at the mask... terrible, even with a dark haired model on a white background. So frustrating. The concept of the task space is great... if only refine edge worked.

I just reinstalled 2015 (Creative Cloud>Apps>Previous Versions>Find Additional Apps>Previous Versions>View Previous Versions>Photoshop>Install>and then choose version from dropdown). Unfortunately, that was not the last version of 2015 (its the woman's face, rather than the little girl climbing stairs), but the refine edge tool works great.

I love the new content-aware crop, and the face-aware liquify tools, so will probably need to run both 2015 and 2015.5 on my computer. Someone should get fired over this.

I'm so disappointed from the results coming from the new select and mask tool. I just updated to Photoshop CC 2017 with hopes that this would be corrected but it's the exact same mess that it was in 2015.5. Perhaps Adobe underestimated how many professional photographers relied on the accuracy of the refine edge tool?? The select and mask tool is a complete disaster and total step backward, in my opinion.

nobody at adobe cares. they will keep on telling you nothing changed.

it ́s a sad joke. it ́s obvious that something is broken.

i use topaz labs remask for now.

but that adobe denies the problems shows how they tread their customers.

The old refine edge tool is still in PS2015 to 2017. to access it first make a selection. Then open the Select menu. hold the shift key down and choose "Select and mask." The old refine edge opens instead!!!!!!!
