Photoshop: Please let me rename Layer via a keyboard shortcut

Dear Adobe Gripe #12910

"Please let me Rename Layer via keyboard (custom Actions don't work?). It
will increase my efficiency a lot. And I hate mis-doubleclicking a layer,
which brings up blending options."

You can already do this by adding a keyboard shortcut to bring up the Layer>Layer Properties... dialog.

First, select Edit>Keyboard Shortcuts..., then navigate to the Layer (Group) Properties... entry and add your shortcut. I've used Cmd + Opt + R here for example:

Then, when you use Cmd + Opt + R it brings up the Layer Properties dialog with the name field highlighted. Rename the layer and hit return to accept the changes:

Layer properties dialog from this picture is gone from Photoshop? Replaced with nice non-dialog renaming?

The command to rename layers highlights the inline layer naming, so no more modal dialog you have to answer to.

Related renaming shortcut:

In Photoshop CS6 after you enter the layer name field to rename it, you can hit tab to put focus on the next layer to rename it....and so on.

I've selected a layer using mouse, so the "active" area might be the layer group panel. Why don't enter key permit me to rename the layer ? Enter activate the opacity field...

If layer = selected, on press "enter key" = rename layer

this would be the more intuitive behaviour for enter key, at least for Mac users

I agree Gabriel. Actually I think I might have been the one posting this gripe 4 years ago. It's a shame they haven't fixed it. :) I like your Enter key idea because it doesn't seem to be in use (outside of Text tool or Transform tool modes).

Ooo! Turns out there's a Rename Layer menu command that can be assigned a shortcut! I assigned 'F2' to mine. Works perfectly. Who knows how long this has been active...
