Photoshop: Is the photo forever ruined?

I was just trying to edit my photo. At thatpoint, one of the applications was hanging, after which Photoshop was crashed. When I tried to open the photo again, an error appeared on the screen -Photoshop can not open files in the "[other file format Photoshop shouldbe able to open]" format. Now I can not open the file in any way. Is thephoto forever ruined?

Quit PS, find file wherever you have it, and right click (this is from the desktop or inside a folder then on a Mac and I would think something similar with Windows) go to the flyout menu that says 'open in Photoshop CC 2018. Hopefully will work. Also, if you opened it from a Raw or DNG format, PS will not do anything to a Raw/DNG format. I would also try the 'open recent' menu bar IN PHOTOSHOP. It's under the 'file' menu and the file will show there. That version might be before you crashed, and it'll open. If it doesn't, the worst you will have to do is to re-edit the Raw or DNG, but it should be wherever you put it...

Post a screenshot of the file in your finder/window,  and the error message. could be a naming issue

Try drag and dropping the image in a web browser.
After the browser opens the image, right click and save the image.
Then try opening it in Photoshop.

Another method:
You said that you can open it in paint.NET, you can open the image in paint.NET and do save as...and save it as a new file.
Then try opening that new file in Photoshop.

Those two methods as a rule give a result; otherwise, you may use adobe psd repair tool by other ways like

Sysinfo Photoshop Recovery is specifically designed for digital artists, illustrators, and photographers who work with PSD files a lot and often get them from all kinds of sources and on various media, so some of them appear damaged and won't open. Photoshop Recovery Tool helps to repair damaged PSD file data in the worst cases of data corruption.

There are four techniques through which you can do the same:

  • Using “Open Recent” Technique
  • Recovering from Backup
  • Recovering data through temp files
