Photoshop: Image from 8 bit depth into 16, gray level % 0.

Hello everyone. I am not expert of photoshop but I used it to convert an image from 8 bit depth into 16. However after I did so the gray level of the picture decrease until 0. Is there a way to increase again the gray level (%)? It is quite important for me because I am comparing images and I need them with the same parameters. Thank you in advance.

Hmm. It sounds like you went to a Bitmap depth. If you go to Image > Mode, what are the settings checked in that pull down?
