Photoshop: How do I prep a photograph to take into Illustrator to vectorize?

How do I clean up and delete areas on a photograph to prepare it to be taken into Illustrator and made into Vector art? I have seen a tutorial on this and can't find it. Help!

Hi Mary, I'd try doing a google search for "Illustrator Live Trace" as it can do amazing things in and of itself without using Photoshop to prep:

It's a pretty broad/vague question. There are lots of things you could do.

As a starting point, I might look at Image>Adjustments>Posterize... as a way to limit the number of colors and flatten out areas of color.
