Photoshop: Gives me "Could not complete your request because of a program error." when trying to open a file

Photoshop give me this error message, but other programs open the file with no problem. Here's the file: https://adobe.ly/2moAWYQ I discovered that it's actually a .png file, but has a .jpg file suffix.

Rename the extension to png from jpg and it works fine.

Howdy Richard,

Yeah, that's correct behavior.  If Photoshop encounters a mismatch between a file's extension and it's file type, the app is going to get confused.  Photoshop includes the Open As command specifically to allow users to open a file that has a mismatched file extension.  Otherwise, Photoshop doesn't try to second-guess the user.

Thanks,
David

I am using a PSD File, a file ive used over the years, and literally ill go in and let's say increase font size, go to save "could not build a preview because of a program error" I've got this message at least 50 times today. Uninstalled, then reinstalled. Happens again. Close program, shut down the computer, go back in and I can make several changes, then bam again and again. I'm literally having to make one change save it, then another, save it, and so on till I get the error message and then once again close photoshop and then reopen the same things. I am on an Apple Mac Pro, iOS is 10.14.6, running photoshop CC with over 50 GB of free space, and nothing but issues? What suggestions do you have for me?

Hi Robert,

First, are you having trouble with all your files or just this one you've been using for years?  If you're having consistent problems with multiple files, I would suspect your system's integrity.  Personally, I would rather spend a little time and make sure my device is stable, so if it were me in such a situation, I'd reinstall my OS and check my hard drive to make sure my Mac is solid and reliable.

On the other hand, if you have this problem only with a few specific files, particularly if parts of one of these documents was copied into the others, then you might have a problem with one of the documents being corrupted, just like happens in Word or Excel.

I hope that helps,
Thanks,
David
