Photoshop freezing, but not in a way I have ever seen before

I recently updated to 22.0.1 Other than a general slowing down of just about everything, and staring at the spinning beachball more often, I've had a couple of freezes unlike any previous freezes or crashes. It always happens whilst making selections using the pencil tool, and part way through the selection process the "screen image" just freezes, but  PS itself has not crashed. I can still save the image I'm working on and close it down, and I can even carry on editing other image in PS, I just can't do anything further on the image I was making the section on. It's almost as if the screen has frozen just for this specific image.

The upside is I can save the image, so don't lose any work other than the selection I started, but to start working on the image again I have to close PS down and reopen everything. Not the end of the world, but it's a real pain when making a lot of selections.

Machine spec is a mid 2010 Mac Pro running Mojave 10.14.6

2 x 3.33 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon

96 GB 1333 MHz DDR

Radeon RX 580 8G

Prior to the update PS 21 ran okish bar a few glitches.

Any feedback or suggestions will be most welcome.

Thanks,

Phil
