Photoshop: File saving extremely slow in 20.0.2

Question

Just updated to 20.0.2 and while it appears to have fixed the freeze on sleep problem, file saving is now extremely slow.

It makes no difference if it is a single layer photo or multiples of any type of layer. Document size 208Mb and file type is TIFF. Compression is set to none

The document is slow to save from the very start of the saving process and what would take approx 1 second now takes up to 5 minutes.

No settings in Photoshop were changed between updating versions.

The hard drive is less than a year old and has over 1TB free space. I use separate disks for application, data, scratch.

Have you tried moving your preferences folder to the desktop and start Photoshop with fresh prefs to see if that makes a difference?

That's very strange that Save is slow now. I have one other report on Mac that says Open is really slow after the update, but I'm not seeing a consistent pattern.

I have the same problem, maybe not hitting the 5 min mark, but due to several losses of files because I didn't save, I got into a habit of constantly ctr+S which is now really slowing down my work process since I constantly have to wait for it to finish saving until I can continue to work..

Same problem - extremely slow saving. I'm working on native PSD docs. They are about 15 mb. One file has 10 artboards, 1000 x 1000 px, 72dpi. PSD 21.02 running on imac mohave 10.14.6. 16 gigs RAM. I have not updated to the next ios due to warnings that CC apps do not like the new update. These saves should only take a few seconds.

I am having a similar problem with Photoshop v21.0.2 on Windows 10 when saving to an internal hard drive. Progress goes almost instantly to 99%, then stays there for between 30 and 60 seconds before the save operation completes. My file sizes are not very large, typically 200 MB. This is a only problem I have noticed since upgrading from v20.0.6 few days ago.

Same here with 21.0.2, save is incredibly slow, just sits at 99% for ages. Does eventually save but it's massively slow, really interrupting workflow (deadlines! deadlines!).

Edit: I’ve just installed 20.0.8 and tried the same files and they save quickly without getting stuck.

I'm having this same problem when saving PSDs on Photoshop 21.0.2 on a Mac with OS 10.15.2. Saves the first 99% in a very few seconds then takes minutes to finish saving. It's killing my productivity. HELP!

If you're on macOS 10.15 Catalina, are you saving to an external drive formatted for ExFAT? If so, try saving to a drive formatted to NTFS or another macOS native format. https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/photoshop-and-macos-catalina.html#SavingdoesntcompletewhensavingtoanexFATformatteddrive We are working with Apple to address this issue.

Same for me. Windows, saving to internal HDD drive, PS 20.0.3. PSD files from 0,5 to 2 GB. The same file saves in few seconds, and 5 minutes later it's stuck at about 80% and saves for 1-2 minutes.
It's happening since PS 20.0.X.

My solution. Upgrading to 20.x did nothing. I use TIFF file format NEVER psd. Settings for save are image compression = NONE, Layer Compression = RLE. I got limited success using PSD with compression disabled, but the best results came with upgrading to v22 and using TIFF. Benefits of TIFF, same in PS as using PSD, zero difference, just faster. Compatible with more image software than psd (which is why Adobe like you all to used psd). PSD in PS is slower, less compatible (= propriety). I'm currently , as of today, running PS 21.0.2 20191122.r.57 2019/11/22 in TIFF and its fast.

Same for me with Photoshop 21.0.3 and the earlier PS 2020 x versions too - saving to the internal SSD drive on a Macbook Pro less than a year old, 32GB RAM, 2.9 GHz Intel Core i9 processor, with about 1TB free. Tiffs and PSD files hang at 99% for ages and sometimes it crashes so my last changes aren't saved.

It happens whether it's a single layer tiff from my Olympus mirrorless 16MP camera, or a multi-layered PSD file taken with Sony 42MP mirrorless - so relatively small and very large files are both a problem. For tiff files I usually use zip compression. Wondering if I don't compress until the final save if that will speed things up?

I also have to now hit the PS icon after I click Edit in PS from LR, it doesn't automatically take me to PS. Slowing down my workflow. Very frustrating. I'm using Mojave OS

Disable compression of PSB and PSD saves files in a flash although my right speeds are 3312 MB/s by CrystalDiskMark.  However, with compression allowed, there was a definite lag but file sizes are half the size when compression engaged.

I have this problem with v.21.1.2 and OS 10.15.4. Compression is off. I save to an external SSD, formatted APFS. Same problem with TIF; PSD; PSB. No difference. Moves to 99% quickly and then takes 30 sec. or more. It is worse with larger files (larger than 1 GB).
