Photoshop: CS6 Slow compared to CS5.1 with large files
PS CS6 has a lot of enhancements and great features. it launches very fast, and the control is very responsive and smooth.
although i am experiencing some speed issues with very large files. compared to CS5.1, where i don't have any of these issues.
the files are PSBs, 9000x8000px, 80+layers, RGB, 8bit
i have the same performance settings for both, cs6 and cs5
i am working on MAC PRO, 16GB ram, SSD scratch, 2TB raid, Radeon HD 5770, Snow Leopard.
the main issues i have are:
- no refresh when i move the curve on adjustment layer. the refresh comes after i let go.
- jagged pan
- extremely slow moving of layers and layer groups, even if they are with smaller dimensions (800x400pix)
again, working with files with less layers or smaller dimensions is very fast.
thanks for your help and support!

Tried everything in this thread that was suggested, nothing worked, until...
Setting Cache Level to 2 fixed pretty much everything, no weird zooming behaviour or any of the glitches and beachballing that happend before.
So, looks like that can be a fix - to be honest I've never touched cacheing before on any install of Photoshop and I've been using it since version 2.5 (20 years, wow!) but there you go.
P.S. gotta agree with Sean above, the employee responses on this thread have been very poor indeed - this is an official pro-software support forum, not YouTube comments.

I am running it on a brand new (2 weeks old) maxed out iMac (16GB RAM off a solid state drive / 3.4 GHz Quad Core).
I work with files of between 200—700mb (layered). I purchased the new machine and CS6 as CS3 was starting to run slowly on the old iMac. Having parted with the best part of £3.5k I am back where I started!
Please can Adobe respond and let me know what is being done about this, it's driving me up the wall!

Slow Photoshop CS 6.

Having spent £3.5k to get a machine and package that would be super fast this is incredibly frustrating and just not good enough. PLEASE SORT THIS OUT ADOBE.

There is a distinct lack of effort by Adobe to tackle this problem head on. Having spoken with their customer services department there was a very vague attempt to look at the problem that essentially culminated in the sentiment that most of our users are entirely happy with speed. Rubbish!
All of the other core products in CS6 are working well. This is a specific issue with Photoshop CS6 which Adobe are struggling to respond to.
Given the cost of the software, the fact that it is essential to the majority of people who use it professionally, we'd expect a much stronger and more focused response from Adobe.
WHEN WILL THERE BE AN UPDATE TO ADDRESS THE ISSUES THAT ARE DETAILED IN THIS POST?

People like us are professional users, who have paid for the software and depend on the software to work properly to get work done on a daily basis.

Excerpts of my configuration is pasted below.
7/19/12 6:31 PM
Hardware:
Hardware Overview:
Model Name: Mac Pro
Model Identifier: MacPro5,1
Processor Name: 6-Core Intel Xeon
Processor Speed: 2.93 GHz
Number Of Processors: 2
Total Number Of Cores: 12
L2 Cache (per core): 256 KB
L3 Cache (per processor): 12 MB
Memory: 48 GB
Processor Interconnect Speed: 6.4 GT/s
Boot ROM Version: MP51.007F.B03
SMC Version (system): 1.39f11
SMC Version (processor tray): 1.39f11
Serial Number (system): CK123057EUH
Serial Number (processor tray): J511601SNBH8C

Software:
System Software Overview:
System Version: Mac OS X 10.6.8 (10K549)
Kernel Version: Darwin 10.8.0
If Adobe needs it I can deliver the full system profile. I think CS6 performance is ridiculous under the circumstances mentioned above.
Yes, I would most definitely like to have this resolved in the near future.

i just made some tests as well on my side and created a test file which shows exactly the issues most of us here are seeing. is it possible to share this file with you and also everyone else here, so we can see if we are talking about the same problem.
the file contains a lot of gradients with masks and a lot of multiplied dots in separate groups.
the problems i am experiencing with this particular file are:
- extremely slow moving of groups of layers (test file: white dots group)
- very slow pan
- not immediate redraw when changing adjustment layer (curve, levels, H/S)
the things does improve with thumbs off, but still not usable and very slow. still getting the progress bar when moving bunch of layers (white dots group) and can not follow the movement.
i don't see any improvements turning cache levels to 2, i is getting even worse. turned back to 6 levels.
all this compared with cs5.1 on the same mac, sys info is somewhere in the beginning of the thread. moving the dots on cs5.1 is jagged but follows the movement.
here a link with the file:
https://www.sugarsync.com/pf/D046051_...
everyone else having the sam issues, feel free to download the file and test it on your side.
please give us your results here.
thanks!

I've now updated to 10.7.4 but I'm afraid this has had absolutely no effect whatsoever. Still unresponsive on all fronts even down to the mouses right click functionality - works sometimes and doesn't others.
One major thing I have noticed is that my layered file sizes are massively larger than when I was on CS3 - why is this? I have just transferred a file that is 8.24MB file size / 952MB layered on CS 6 on my new mac back to my old mac running CS3 and the size is 8.24MB file size / 206.3MB layered. There seems to be a major discrepancy. Please can you let me know on this?

it doesn't matter how big the file is or how many layers it has.
compared to CS5.1 the pan in CS6 is not quite responsive.
panning with zoom more than 100% while masking out an object is something i do very often. i just feel that when i move around it doesn't feel natural as in older versions. it feels like the pan tool doesn't hold the canvas strong enough and it "slips" from the hand.
turning thumbs off doesn't make any changes.
