Photoshop: CS6 Slow compared to CS5.1 with large files

PS CS6 has a lot of enhancements and great features. it launches very fast, and the control is very responsive and smooth.

although i am experiencing some speed issues with very large files. compared to CS5.1, where i don't have any of these issues.

the files are PSBs, 9000x8000px, 80+layers, RGB, 8bit

i have the same performance settings for both, cs6 and cs5
i am working on MAC PRO, 16GB ram, SSD scratch, 2TB raid, Radeon HD 5770, Snow Leopard.

the main issues i have are:

- no refresh when i move the curve on adjustment layer. the refresh comes after i let go.
- jagged pan
- extremely slow moving of layers and layer groups, even if they are with smaller dimensions (800x400pix)

again, working with files with less layers or smaller dimensions is very fast.

thanks for your help and support!

I've tested Photoshop CS6 performance on a few machines now and on large files the performance on my Macbook Air 11" is far better than on my MacPro 2x2.4Ghz!!

There's obviously something seriously bad going on, could it be something to do with non-SSD disks?

David, that's really interesting that an Air outperforms a Mac Pro on CS6.

I wouldn't say it has to do with non-SSDs underperforming, though. I am on a MacBook Pro with an aftermarket SSD that generally screams in every other area of performance, and I'm experiencing this slow-down issue.

That's useful info, just a thought, is your scratch disk using the SSD as well?

9 Messages

I tried both ways: 1. to set my SSD as the scratch disk and 2. to set my normal hard drive as the scratch disk. There was no noticeable difference in performance in either case.

Same here, no difference on SSD or "normal" hard drive.

thanks, that's all good data, I think we can rule out platter disks as the culprit ;)

I am currently using the beta, patiently waiting for Adobe to send me the real one hoping the issue would be resolved by now.

From what I can read this isn't the case. But this is not limited to large files !

I work on web interfaces and moving more then a few layers can cause several seconds of delay and I discovered for the first time the nudge waiting bar.

I have never seen this waiting bar on any Ps version before even when working on rather large print files.

I tried contacting Adobe the day after the beta was released and never had any feedback on this issue.

Yes, let's hope they are going to release a fix soon.
but for now i would suggest everyone who has the same issues to vote for this topic.

till now we have only 5 stars:(

this topic is not "in progress" or even "Acknowledged"

thanks!

We've never seen a slowdown beyond the known layer thumbnail slowdown. We haven't reproduced any other slowdown, so we can't acknowledge such a problem or possibly fix what we've never seen.

Our only guess is that there is still something odd about your system causing the slowdown that only a few people are seeing.

As the problem only exists CS6 can you give us any insight at all into what could be causing it?

My Mac Book is 2 weeks old and has not been customized much at all. The Photoshop CS6 install is also totally standard from the download link - no customizations or changes. With smaller files like website designs with a few dozen layers, it's fast and responsive. With dozens or hundreds of layers and larger files it's much slower than CS4 and 5 to do pretty much anything.

We have no idea what is different about your systems compared to millions of other users not seeing a slowdown.

We need you to help tell us what is different about your system that might cause a slowdown: third party plugins, external software, configuration, bad drivers, etc.

Do we vote at the top by agreeing that we have this problem or is there a specific place on the Adobe site we should be voting? I would very much like to see it fixed as would all of us in this thread. Thanks!

I am surprised that the layer thumbnail slowdown didn't raise a red flag before the final release.

It's only a noticeable problem on documents with dozens of layers, when you try to move many layers at a time. But yes, I wish it had been caught sooner...

i'm sorry chris, but millions of other users maybe use PS with only few layers and don't see the issue.

on the other hand many professionals working with huge files every day don't switch so quickly. they would wait to see if there are any issues with the new software. so probably they gonna have these issues too and we gonna hear from them later this year.

the systems of the other users here, having the same problem are very different, from diferent generations, and all have the same problem. so there should be something. maybe the problem is bigger than only the layer icons, and maybe when you find the solution the other slowness problems are fixed too.

No, millions of professionals are doing exactly what you describe, and seeing CS6 faster or the same as CS5/4/3.

Just because you see a problem does not mean that everyone else is seeing the same problem. All too frequently these sorts of issues are related to some specific configuration issue or external factor on specific systems.

We can't even be sure that everyone is seeing the same issue, since some seem to be seeing just the thumbnail slowdown (describing it as an overall slowdown), while others may be seeing an actual overall slowdown.

i am working with many advertising and fashion photographers and also in a studio with 5 other retouchers. no one except me is even thinking about switching and even trying the new PS. most of them stick to CS3 because of performance issues. the only people i know, working with CS6 are art directors doing quick small layouts. and they are very happy.

we as professionals can not afford a slowdown in our workflow. people please, photoshop is a professional tool in a first place and than a toy for hobby photographers!!!!

"because of performance issues".. and yet each version of Photoshop gets faster. Gotta love those myths flying around...

hey chris, i am a customer and i just bought your product. i'm not trying to get a refund with this topic, i just want to help. no need to be offending here!

and yes PS is getting slower with each version. the new version only starts faster, it applies the filters faster, it saves faster, and probably you'l have better results with benchmarks.
but the usability, response, refresh, pan, moving objects is slower with each version on the same machine for me. although i made some major hardware upgrades.

and as you can see i'm not the only one.

Something is very wrong with your system -- those things are always getting faster or staying the same speed with each release. You can contact Adobe customer support for a refund, but I'm afraid you're blaming your new car for the condition of your road.

i really don't understand why are you so offensive? maybe some marketing trick?

it is obvious that this not an individual case, and as you can see from this thread "those things" are getting slower for other people too.

Wondering if they asked the other millons of people about performance? CS6 is heavier and we probably need faster systems.

This performance issue is normal for any program that grows up. Try running W7 in an old Pentium machine...

The problem is if you already have a fast system and the newest one...

It's a fact that CS6 is heavier, so a 100% of users should be seeing a reduction in speed depending on their system, if you have a really fast system the slowdown is probably not big enough to annoy you.

I doubt millions of users have not seen this issue since many of the people will have a bit older systems, maybe round a year old?

How can Adobe know that millions of users don't have this issue? Many of the users don't complaint, other will never see the issue because of their techniques. And I've never received a performance poll from Adobe.

How many complaints does Adobe need to aknowledge when they really have a problem? Maybe a few complaints can reflect what millions of users see?

I'm just hoping for a fast update that makes this problem a bit less annoying.

I agree. Each new version of Photoshop requires more system resources than the last. It's never been any other way. CS6 though is of course different in that it is also seriously buggy. Both Illustrator and Photoshop.

Agreed. Illustrator crashes on a daily basis when trying to export to PNG or TIF (depends)... I fail to see how an i5 processor and 12GB of RAM are not sufficient to run latest CS without problems. :/

I'm having the same problem moving large layer groups. My current file size is only 12.8 MB, but I'm still having problems.

It seems to run even slower on a non-SSD.

Probably no corelation, but I've also noticed that the Document Size information (example: Doc: 4.81M/1.58G) is way up on CS6 (here's a comparison: http://cl.ly/2X3C3A1C0q1a45230z1a).

My colleagues and I are not sure if we should do the update or stick to CS5.

@Chris Cox:
" "because of performance issues".. and yet each version of Photoshop gets faster. Gotta love those myths flying around..."

Sorry, but I'm getting sick of the tone you put at us. No offense. Perhaps you think we made these problems up or there are problems with our systems.
Well, I can confirm the sluggishness of PS CS6 on a pretty new late 2010 iMac, which I consider to be a solid computer, 2.8 quad core with 8 gb ram. See my test results below. There are NO problems with our systems!
I'm going to install PS CS6 now on my second Mac, and if I encounter the same slowness, than it is not coincidence anymore. Fyi, this is a very new early 2012 MacBook Pro 17" quad core i7. It should be able to run Photoshop flawlessly.

Please consider there are many different kind of Photoshop users:
- Photographers: Who are editing perhaps 1 single huge image, perhaps adding a few layers here and there.
- UI designers: Who has PSD's with many folders, layers, vector elements, effects, images and type. For this group perhaps the sluggishness will be more noticeable.
- Etc...

I love the work you guys at Adobe did for CS6, absolutely props for the great work, but please take the problems all users state here seriously and don't immediately think there are problems with our systems. Thank you.

Sorry, I was not trying to be rude in my previous post, but we are just all frustrated. I know for sure you are trying to help us, but please at least take our problems seriously and don't assume things too early, especially if you are not the one who need to use the software to produce professional work everyday. Try to stand in our shoes and understand our problems. And I know we need to provide you with as much details as possible so we will try to do that.

14 Messages

It's really frustrating and I agree that being made to feel like it's our fault for working with large files that have multiple layers is ludicrous.

In fact, as I write this comment, I'm waiting for what appears to be between 2-3 full minutes to open a file that's 5.2 MB. Only 2 other applications open, no other PSD's open. Brand new Mac with tons of Ram. The common thread is that the more layers (and nested layer groups) you have, the slower CS6 is.

I asked a co-worker to open the same file in CS5 and it opened almost instantly. Considering this is what I work with all day every day, I'm essentially now about 30-40% as productive as I used to be.

does anyone have also a refresh issue when moving the opacity slider, or moving the curve on adjustment layer.

with very large files i don't see an instant refresh when changing adjustments or opacity. it doesn't matter how long i wait, the refresh comes after i let go.

this happens not always, but most of the time.

just want to know if this is related?

thanks!

This may be a red herring, but it is worth a shot. Could the people who are having the slow down try a couple if things for me?

1. Go Preferences:Performance Pane:
2. Click on Advanced Settings...
3. Switch mode to Basic.
4. Restart PS

Does the problem go away?

if NO proceed.

1. Go Preferences:Performance Pane:
2. Uncheck "Use Graphics Processor"
3. Restart PS

Does the problem go away?

Trying to narrow down if this is a OGL problem or not.

If none of these fixes your issue be sure to go back to the settings the way they were before you started turning options off.

A quick way to do this is just to trash preferences.

Cmmd+Alt+Shift after launch and click OK to the clear preferences.

David, it seems this actually solved the problem for one person: http://twitpic.com/9o48fb

I tried it myself and noticed a palpable improvement, but nothing dramatic. Dragging layers is now no longer sufferable. However scrolling and moving the canvas around is still painfully slow.

9 Messages

 •

Actually, scratch that! After coming back to PS CS6 a second time after turning "Use Graphics Processor" off, scrolling and moving the canvas around do get a nice improvement. :)

Still a tad behind CS5, though. But at least this makes CS6 usable for me.

Moly thank you for your feedback. Does having Use Graphics Processor ON but set to basic in advanced help? Or does it only go faster when Graphics processor is OFF completely? Please remember to restart PS in between tests.

9 Messages

 •

156 Points

So, running in Basic mode for "Use Graphics Processor" definitely works better than Advanced — but turning it off completely still has an advantage over even Basic mode, particularly in moving around the canvas.

Hope that helps to pinpoint the root of the problem for you guys.

That points toward your display driver as being the cause.

Chris, if that's the case, then is there anything I can do about that? I don't know exactly what a display driver is.

Display driver == video card driver == GPU driver. Updating the driver might help, or contacting the GPU maker to work on fixing the bug.

How do you account for the issue being experienced on a brand new Mac Book with no customizations done to it? It's literally 10 days old and all the settings are standard? To me it seems like a lot of the heavy users that work with large files have not yet upgraded because they're evaluating it - but those of us that have all seem to have this issue with larger files. Do we all have display driver issues? Seems like too much of a coincidence to be the user's fault(s). Plus if our display drivers were all out of date, why does CS4 and CS5 work so much faster with larger files?

231 Messages

 •

moly, the way to update your drivers on mac is to update your system. if your system is up to date, than you have the latest drivers.

it was already mentioned here. strange that the employees here don't know this.

Looking into this more I'm not convinced this is a display driver problem. If I turn off "Use Graphics Processor" I'm still getting massive delays when zooming after initially opening the file. After a 3-4 minutes the file seems to settle down and then it gets better but then it'll start beachballing again if I zoom out again.

No, That is a more limited issue: just moving a bunch of layers, caused by a slowdown in drawing the thumbnails in the layers palette.

You can work around that by setting the thumbnail size to "none" in the layers palette options. We're still working on a proper fix for the thumbnails.

Finding ACR works well in CS6 ...... once an image is opened it is constance spinning wheel...... move image to new blank layer to add more background...... spinning wheel..... use levels or curves, spinning wheel.....

CS6 is just so slow, I have gone back to using CS 5.1

I have same issues on Windows 7 x64 box with 16 Gigs of DDR3 Ram and an i7 2600k @ 3.4 Ghz (8 core)...also have latest nVidia drivers with 560Ti...I personally never had great results in any previous release with 3d accelleration on (I woudl only turn it on as needed).

Although turning off previews in layer pallet made a huge difference for me...a good 50% performance boost when moving any layer or group, its still absolutely not anywhere near what i would call usable.

I think i messed up by installing CS6 on a disk rather than on an SSD. My cs5 and 5.1 was on SSD (the application part)..I think I am going to try and install it on the SSD after removing my install from the Disk drive. We'll see what happens.

As with others, this is only on larger files... I have to believe it is a caching issue of some sort. I guess I'll keep playing with it and see what happens. If not I'll reinstall CS5.1 and only use the features I wante from CS6 as needed.

As a follow up to the above, i just uninstalled everything, made sure my computer was completely updated, rebooted and then deleted everythigna dobe adn then reinstalled application on SSD rather than Disk and reupdated software with No change whatsoever in results...

IMPORTANT:

I was just working with my fresh install and I have to say the problem goes away to some degree after several minutes of working with a composition...it seems like it is progressively cache-ing the document. Try zooming all the way in and then all the way out of a document when you first open it. For me, it works quite well like it is cache-ing the entire thing...almost like in CAD when you regen once zoomed in and once zoomed out.

I dont remember this behavior on cs5.1, but now that i know how to get around it, its not a "deal killer".

Seeing similar issues here with CS6 and large fiels with lots of layers.

Turning off thumbnails or switching to the Channels palette help responsiveness....but overall it seems a bit more sluggish than CS5 did.

Same problem here. Maybe not as bad as some others but I do notice cs6 being slower with large files. Its usable but i wish it was a bit more responsive. Unfortunaly I'm always working on images between 3-6g in size...

I especially notice it with the Transform tool. Nudging and trasforming is slow in general

Also as someone else mentioned. When i do colour adjustments I cannot see the adjustments realtime. It's not until i let go the arrow that it refreshes the colour. Before in Cs4 if i moved the arrow on the slider it would show me the adjustments realtime.
