Photoshop: CS6 Dialog Box Looses Focus During Task Switching on MacOS 10.8

On MacOS Mountain Lion, when task switching out and back into Photoshop (I personally use the command-tab shortcut often) WHILE a Photoshop dialog box is open, for example PDF import options or color picker, when switching back to Photoshop the dialog box is now 'out of focus', aka, not the top-selected window, and I have to switch back out of Photoshop and back in a few times to get that window to be 'on top' again - sometimes it only gets fixed if I only use the mouse to task switch. The program is completely unusable until I trick it back into a state where the dialog box is back on top.

I don't know if this is specific to mac or a specific operating system, and/or if it is specific to Photoshop only, but it is a really big pain in the butt ever since I upgrade to CS6. I am current on all updates.

I have this same issue and it's very frustrating. There seems to be no way to fix it.

I can't reproduce this on MacOS 10.7 or 10.6.

(and 10.8 is too unstable for me to keep around, so I'll have to wait for someone else to test it)

QE couldn't repro either. Can either of you post a screen capture of it happening? We need a few more clues to try and get it to happen.

Thanks for your reply Jeffrey.

I just updated to 13.0.1 and still have this issue. I'm using OS X 10.8.2.

Switching between Photoshop and another app using Command+Tab and clicking back on a Photoshop document does not always regain focus. This can occur with a dialog present or during general usage.

Here's a screencast along with steps to reproduce. It's very inconsistent and hard to pin down, but happens frequently enough that it can be quite frustrating.

* Open Photoshop
* Create new document with a fill
* Bring up Gaussian Blur dialog
* Command+Tab to Mail
* Create New Email
* Click back on your document in Photoshop
* The document inconsistently gains focus

Steps to reproduce:

CMD/ALT+Tab to another app/program
CMD/ALT+Tab back to Photoshop

It doesn't happen every time, so you can't just pop in there and try it, but it can happen a couple times in an hour. I don't know what conditions encourage it, but _maybe_ it happens more when the Layer Style window is open for me?

Oh! It was also happening before 10.8 with CS6 running on 10.7

Do you have the 13.0.1 update? Maybe that's the difference?

Application Manager has no update for Photoshop.

Strange. If you do Photoshop>About Photoshop... does it say 13.0.1 in the dialog?

Hey Jeffrey,

What's the status of this bug report?

The steps I laid out here include a screencast of how to reproduce the bug.

We tried your steps - and could not reproduce the problem.
There must be some other factor missing - something different on your system from all of ours.

This is disappointing. It happens to me all the time (several times a day) and it doesn't seem like it's being taken seriously. It's extremely annoying.

We take these reports seriously -- but we can't fix what we can't reproduce.

There is something else about your system that is different from all of our systems - and that factor has something to do with your loss of focus. Until you can tell us what that is, we can't reproduce the problem, and thus have no idea where to start looking for a cause or solution.

This is happening to me all the time in 10.6.8 and PS 13.0.1 and this is the best way for me to reliably reproduce this (it happens other times as well):

I use Russell Browns "edit layer in ACR" plugin a lot and it takes a little while to run through the scripts and I always forget that this is going to happen and go to check my mail. If I Command-Tab to Mail or another app and then either Command-Tab back to PS, I get a dialog box with a progress bar that says "Replacing Smart Objects" with a full progress bar infront of the ACR window that cannot be cancelled out of, nor can you select another PS window directly or with window switching keyboard commands. In this case I recently discovered that Control-Esc will cancel out of it though (after months of having to force quit the program and losing anything that wasn't auto recovered)

I experience the same issue. PS 13.0 OS 10.8.2

Command-Tab out of Photoshop to any other App and Command-Tab back, there's no focus on PS. Click the desktop, then Command-Tab back to PS and it has focus.

Please see the previous discussion. We cannot reproduce this. So there is most likely some other factor on your system that leads to this behavior that other users are not seeing. We don't know what that factor might be. Until we know what other factor is involved, we can't do much about the issue.

I have it also and honestly it has now lost me around 12hrs of work in total, it's utter crap, it's seemingly quite random but if i task switch when using the application and then come back I have no response from the app.

I've applied the update and still the same issue. It's pathetic.

Im running :

MacBook Pro on 10.8.2 OS

Fed up.

I like the fact you guys still have not figured it out seemingly and also don't seem to be able to reproduce a bug that from what I can see online through twitter and forums is a pretty common theme.

Well worth the money for the application.

What are your exact steps to repro? Which dialog(s)? Does it happen every time? Is there a reason you're not running 10.8.4? Any 3rd party plug-ins? Any third party OS utilities?

Happens to me all the time on my macbook pro. I'm a member of Creative Cloud so I have CS6. On my mac, I hold down click on the photoshop icon in the dock and choose show all windows.

As for testing, would take more time to trouble shoot than bypass. I only found this post because I was curious if it was a setting I had wrong. That said, it seems to happen frequently if I have a dialog open when I switch windows. Yes I now switching away from Photoshop with a dialog open is bad but here's the deal.. I'm editing >500 product images and go away and come back as I have to. Some times I leave at inopportune times. Also, I'm not saying that it is always when a dialog box is open (not that I now of) but that seems to be one condition. Would be curious if you folks solve the riddle. I'm looking say 5 seconds every time it happens but it's not a crisis.

Haa, happened just after writing this post. I had 3 images open, no dialog. Clicked back on photoshop in the dock. Menu worked fine so I opened a dialog (adjust levels). Couldn't click on a control to modify a level. Photoshop was there but it was confused. I clicked on photoshop icon again and held down, revealing Show All Windows. Chose my image and could then modify the dialog controls. This problem is not limited to levels, it happens to me on other adjustments. (that's mostly what I work with - not being a photoshop guru.) Hope that helps.

Происходит похожее. Mac Os X Mavericks + Photoshop CC + Lightroom 5.

Through similar. Mac Os X Mavericks + Photoshop CC + Lightroom 5. Very often move between Lr and Ps. In Lr converted image in ps, everything is fine, process it. Further, a combination of cmd + tab back to Lr for the case after seeing a play window Lr, but when you click the mouse on any panel on the front pops photoshop. Transition can only be done using exporse or if you click the mouse on the window title Lr ((
