Photoshop: Creating 3D menu greyed out when trying to create 3D Text (PS 13.1/Mac)

I need some assistance with one line of 3D text that I am attempting to create on my MacMini with Photoshop CS6 Extended vers 13.1.1 x64.

I have started a new window with a white background followed with creating a single line of text that creates a new text layer. After creating the one line of text, I select the 3D in the upper task bar and all the selections are greyed out (whether I select all the text, or not) -- and yes, I am selecting the correct layer of the two layers in this document. Under the Type menu there is an "Extrude to 3D" option that I have tried... but nothing changes. I have no ability to make this simple line of text into a 3D anything. Several times I have started a new document from scratch, nothing changes. I have spent much of this afternoon searching every combination of help topics in Google. I have seen many videos and posts about how cool this 3D feature behaves, but I cannot make it happen. What have I missed?

Adobe is enforcing its requirements on hardware. Its mandatory to have 512mb video card in order to use 3d in Photoshop. There are some helpful links below

Paul is correct, you will need a card capable of doing 3D, which requires 512mb or more.

Its preety easy i had this problem too :D. First go to PS then Edit-Preferences-Performance And in performance dialog you will find Use graphic processor and just check it and restart PS :d

Thanks Daniel... if you read Paul Whitehead reply above, unfortunately my MacMini does not have a large enough video card with this latest upgrade. I'll have to tough it out until I can upgrade my Mac. (And yes, I do have "Use graphic processor" selected. 3D still does not work.... Mike

I am working on a MacBook Pro i7 with 16 Mb RAM. As I try to activate the 3D option in Adobe Photoshop CC every item is greyed out. Obviously the AMD Radeon HD 6490M 256 MB doesn't cut it. But I payed 2500 euros for this machine, which is quite a lot more than I would have payed for a PC laptop with the same requirements. So I am really annoyed it is not possible to use the 3D function.

Yes, 256 Meg of VRAM is not enough to use the 3D features. We tried allowing less VRAM, but got a lot of crashes due to problems in the OS/OpenGL code not working correctly in low memory situations.

@chris-who cares if photoshop crashes!?! It should be up to the customer to deal with it or not! Why should adobe care!! If I use 3d and photoshop crashes bc I don't have enough vram then so be it. Unlock this enforcement!!

Chris bringing up the fact that its unsafe is the first I'm hearing.. I guess adobe doesn't want the liability of processors frying from being over worked? We need some clarity and transparency here man.. Why would adobe care!?!

We don't want people losing work due to crashes. The OS/drivers crash when there isn't enough VRAM, so we specify a minimum requirement that we know is generally safe.

The 3d feature worked on my computer before the update. My Mac is brand new and I got the best graphic card I could afford, which was pretty decent if not the best.  So I think this is ridiculous.  Why can't there be an option in the current version to use the same 3d engine or whatever as the older version of photoshop? I don't need it to be twice as fancy .... I just need to be able to access it. I don't care if its the old way of doing it... 
These are reasons why customers hate to update their software. Weird stuff happens, and things you could do previously now cannot be done? It seems these days, updates can just as often make things worse rather than better. Except the customer doesn't have a choice on updating half the time, and companies always assume their updates are improvements.
I don't care if the update made it so that photoshops 3d stuff is better. If I can't access it, then it does me no good.

Hey every1,

i just upgraded from ps cs6 ( non extended ) to photoshop cc, since i need to work with 3d function. I check all the requirements and my macbook pro meets all of it:
macbook pro 15"
Ram : 16gb
Processor: 2.6ghz Intel core i7
OSX : 10.8.5
Processor with 64bit
Hard drive : 750Gb
Graphics/Displays : 2
1 - Intel HD Graphics 4000 with 384MB of vram
2 - NVidia Geforce GT 650M with 1024 of vram

from the looks of it my macbook meets the requirements for using 3d in photoshop but i cannot see the 3d option in the menu, plus the 3D Extrusion is greyed :(

Any tips on how to fix this?

I have the same system profile but slightly upgraded as Luis and I still can't get the 3D to work. I'm in RGB, I've tried 8bit and 16bit, my gpu is enabled. What do I do?

3D in CC can be disabled by the video card (low VRAM, bad driver), or a problem with the activation database.

problem with the activation database , it has nothing to do with VRAM , it can work with 128 or even with 64 mb VRAM performance is bit sluggish but it works.  3d option disable when adobe install and run with standard serial key or by wrong cracking , it only works when use extended serial key or when crack properly which means let adobe think it is in extended mode or when it in trail state.  so first need to change adobe app with correct activation database. then use extended key or crack properly , use RGB color mode.

For some should work: Image > Mode > change to RGB.
