Photoshop: Color Picker sets background swatch instead of foreground swatch

CS5A friend raised a question. When using his eye picker, it's functionality is reversed. By clicking it selects the BACKGROUND color, when selecting color with an 'OPTION' key, it selects the FOREGROUND color.I know there is an easy solution. I had the same situation years ago, but I can't remember how I solved it.Can anyone help? Thanks!

You opened the color palette and selected the background swatch, then forgot about it.

To get back to normal, open the color palette and select the foreground swatch.

Let me know if Chris's solution works for you: Open the Color Panel (Window > Color) and make sure the foreground swatch is selected by clicking on it.

CC2018 - Does not solve the problem... still goes to background. Huge inconvience.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled eyedropper tool bug.

when I use the eyedropper tool instead of it picking the foreground color, it picks the background color. When I hold the option key, it picks the foreground color. Exactly the opposite of previous functionality. Also I'm experiencing a related problem with the brush tool: option key picks the background color

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Photoshop: Eyedropper tool changes background swatch, not foreground swatch.

When using the swatches or eyedropper tool my color selection goes in the background swatch and not the foreground swatch. How do I return it back to default?

Okay, looks like I am not the only person who is now plagued by the eyedropper tool problem. Just when I need to finish a chart up for press. Eyedropper tool will not pick up the colour chosen. Have dumped photoshop preferences already with the command-option-delete in a cold start. Not helpful. The little icon (that switches the foreground and background colours changes to the colour picked but not the actual square for colour). Anyone have any ideas that have worked for the long term. Loaded the new Flash update in case it was that. No.

Open the color picker... make sure you select the foreground color square... it will be hilighted with a thin grey outline... from then on the color picker will default to foreground color.
