Photoshop CC 2019: Custom actions cannot be activated/selected

New Action Sets and New Actions cannot be activated: The check box / tick box to the left of the name of a custom action set and custom action do not allow me to click on them to activate the action. Creating a new set or new actions only creates the title of the set/action but it cannot be activated to play it. The record button acts as if it is recording the action, but the action is not saved when the stop button is clicked. (I successfully created several, multi-step Actions in Illustrator CC, but not able to create even a simple action in Photoshop.)

If you could provide more details about what you're doing and what OS you're running? Have you tried a very simple 3-4 step action and after creating the set and the New action, when you perform the actions it doesn't record? I create and run actions in PS all the time. A great deal can't be recorded in an action, but those things which can haven't been a problem for me.

I'm on a Mac running High Sierra. I'd like to try to replicate here what you're doing, but there isn't enough information for me to do that.

Cristen thanks for the response. -- I have a Windows 10 machine. -- I used the Actions menu to create "New Set..." and to create "New Action...". They can't be selected like the Default Actions and the new actions do not record. (See images.) I have created simple and more complex actions in Illustrator. Actions in Photoshop basically have the same setup functionality according to the documentation. For me, Actions don't work in Photoshop.

That's odd. Once I've recorded a simple action and then stopped recording, the left column is automatically checked. I can check and uncheck at will. I wouldn't worry about the black new action icon. Mine is, too.  But the other sounds like something is broken in your version of PS.

So have you tried saving any custom presets of any kind to disk that you have been able to create, then uninstalling PS with Delete App Preferences? Then reinstalling and starting over with a completely fresh version? I can't really think of anything else, although I can say that both Windows 10 users and Mojave users have reported some odd things happening with their system and PS.

If you don't want to try that, I'm afraid you'll have to wait for someone from Adobe to suggest the right next steps. Failures like this I can only handle with standard methods. Mostly that's worked for me, but not always. However, I haven't heard this complaint from anyone else with the update (take that for what it's worth), so I think you might have to consider it's local to something on your machine.

Thanks for the feedback and the effort. I'll investigate local possibilities (and hope to remember to post the results if anything works). Thanks again.

Sounds like a problem with permissions. If the steps couldn't be saved then this would definitely happen. Can you save your set onto your desktop and try it again?

The Action steps are saved in name only. The recorded portion doesn't really record. Permissions is worth looking at, however. There have been occasions here (where I work) when updates for various programs would only work if I manually opened the program by selecting "Run as Administrator." Thanks for the suggestion.

Hi Brad,

Are you continuing to encounter this problem, because I can confirm that new Actions are working in PS 2019 on both platforms.  Please let us know if you need further assistance.

Thanks,
David

Hi, i'm having the same problem as Brad. I'm on macOS Mojave and running the latest version of Photoshop (20.0.4):  I used the Actions menu to create "New Set..." and to create "New Action...". They can't be selected like the Default Actions and the new actions do not record.
