Photoshop CC 2018: Healing and Spot Healing Brush Lag

In most recent 2018 update, healing and spot healing brush have become much less responsive, sometimes taking multiple seconds after completion of stroke to affect the image.

Late 2016 Macbook, up to date OS and Software

I've done the regular things like turning off OpenCL and changing other performance options... no change.
GIF framerate is sped up 2x

I went back to 2017  - won't upgrade until resolved. I didn't soup up my machine for speed only to have it feel like a G3 ... this bug can turn 5 min into an hour...

I just wanted to clarify that I believe that the issue with the initial lag that this thread started on has been resolved with the latest update to 19.0.1. Because I had that performance drop so soon after I installed the update I assumed it was the bug not being fixed.

I also want clarify that I don't have to be accessing a file from a network location, but it seems if there is any hang or disconnect of a mapped network dive it totally hoses Bridge and any running Adobe app. So I always know where certain people have left the office for the day.

I'm definitely going to start a new thread. It seems like these hangs vary in situation for many users, but they are happening and with greater frequency than I remember with any of the CS versions.

I'm having the same problem with the spot healing brush.  It works fine in my CS6 version and 2017, but not in 2018 version 19.0.0.  I can't download 19.0.1 version.  I also rebooted my computer, I'm using Mac 27" 2013, Sierra 10.12.6, Memory 32 GB, and Graphic Card NVIDIA Get Force GTX 775M 2048 MB.  What do I need to to fix my problem.

I solved my problem.  I found out for some reason my spacing was set to 1000% on my healing brush, and when I returned it to 1 % everything returned to normal operation.

Hi Arnold,

That's strange but I'm glad to hear it's working for you now.

stop blaming others and work on fixing this.
this is a version 2018 error and has nothing to do with settings or hardware.

Hi Tanja,

What OS are you on? What version of Photoshop are you running (Help > System Info). This should have been resolved with a fix in 19.0.1, so if you are still seeing this behavior please tell us what steps you are taking when it happens.

Thanks,
Hannah

Hi Hannah,

I am on a iMac 5K Retina 27 Inch 2017 computer and I am getting all sorts of slow downs primarily using any tools using a brush, zooming in and out, and hiding and showing layers. I cleared out my preferences too.

I don't see a 19.0.1 update for Mac, there is only 19.0 - which isn't working.

Any other solutions? I am still on Sierra, should I upgrade to High Sierra?

Thanks!
Beth

Hi Beth,

Sorry you're seeing slowdowns. If you don't see any updates available in your Creative Cloud desktop app you probably are up to date. To be sure:

Go to Help > System Info and verify that the first line says "20171103.r.190." While that window is up would you copy and paste the contents so I can see the specs on your system?

Upgrading to High Sierra would not likely help with your slowdowns.

Thanks,
Hannah

Hi Hannah,

Thanks for the quick reply! Here is what the info says below. At one point at have my preferences set with "Memory used by Photoshop: 85%" with a Firewire Harddrive as scratch disk space (that has a ton of space), but that didn't help.

For comparison. I am working on my MacBook Pro Late 2015 with 16 GB of RAM, using Photoshop CC 2017 and it is running smoother than my iMac with more power and RAM. It is a huge file, and my MacBook Pro isn't speedy, but it is work-able. The brushes and zoom work. The slow part is the hide/show layers, but it is faster than my iMac.

Thank you!
Beth

Hi Beth,

Thanks for the information. You are already running 19.0.1 (keep an eye out for another update soon). Also I'm checking into possible causes for a slowdown with the rest of your information and I'll get back with you shortly.

Hannah

Hi Hannah,
As per my previous post, 19.0.1 seems to have cured my healing brush lag.
However I am now seeing quite a bit of lag when using a brush having made a layer mask - just thought I would flag this.

Slightly related to this - I'm sure there are many of us power users would love to see a "white paper" on the subject of Photoshop and performance. What is the role processor core and speed v graphics card and RAM. Along with all the various "settings" within Photoshop preferences.
Which is more important to Photoshop cores, processor speed, graphics card, RAM?
Many years ago Adobe produced a great "White Paper" on Raw files - could we have something like this please?

Hi Peter,

Sorry to hear you're seeing lagging performance again. Would you mind making a screen capture of what you're seeing? I'll submit it for investigation.

Regarding a white paper - does this help? This was updated in September, so it's fairly recent:

That performance guide looks very interesting - I will give it good study!

I'll try to capture something on the lag issue, but earlier I turned off smoothing in brush preferences, and things seem to be normal now!

Many thanks,
P

Hi Beth,

In Photoshop > Preferences > Performance > Graphic Processor Settings can you uncheck "Use Graphics Processor," restart Photoshop and see if it makes a difference? This isn't a setting you would normally want to keep, just a test to help narrow down the issue.

Thanks,
Hannah

> Regarding a white paper - does this help?>

Having read this paper multiple times over the years (as it's updated), I know I'm stuck with my old slow computer until Apple gives me a choice, but this was one of the key reasons I wanted to have sets (groups) in my asset panels for ALL the assets. Brushes was the most important, but Patterns is next in importance.

It's really made a difference that I can easily trash and restore my brush sets (not to mention easily make those sets) so I don't bog my computer down completely. I'm still going to have problems with 1.5 GB+ files (on disk, maybe under 1GB) that have 60+ layers and masks on everything. But the remarks on purging (I have a KBSC for that) and getting rid of assets have helped me muddle through with my ancient Mac Pro.

One quibble I have with the Performance paper is it says turn on Automatic Updates in your System software.  Best, imo, is to pay attention to notifications. Auto-updating is playing with fire. Let someone else be the guinea pig for a few days, unless you just love the risk—maybe because you're like the engineers who wrote that Performance paper.<G> None of your regular OS news sites reports  significant problems, then update.

Hi Hannah,

Thanks so much for your help and the performance specs and tips. I'll be checking that out.

So, I turned off the Graphic processor and it has seemed to help. I can zoom in and out of the image much more quickly, I can hide and show layers with faster response, and I don't get any brush lag. (I use the brushes with a mask too, by the way.)

I was desperate yesterday and uninstalled 2018 and reinstalled 2017. PS CC 2017 worked more smoothly than 2018. I reinstalled 2018 for this test...with the Graphics Processor off, 2018 works much, much better and possibly even better than 2017.

Thanks!

Hi Beth,

Okay great! Good to know it's your GPU, so let's make sure your driver is up-to-date. The download for your driver is available here (should be able to auto-detect, but if not look in About This Mac and then choose your download from this link):

http://support.amd.com/en-us/download

Then recheck "Use Graphics Processor" and restart Photoshop to see if that solves it.

Thanks,
Hannah

It seems to me that turning off the GPU is not at all an ideal solution, and only a temporary work around. Using the GPU is a massive plus to speed and performance, so if that's the only solution to making PS work correctly, it would seem to me to be a very strong shortcoming of Photoshop. In my own work, if the only solution was to not use the GPU, it would simply not be a solution due to the scale and volume of images I process.

Just my two cents.

Hi Scott,

You're right. I only suggested that she turn off the GPU to narrow down the problem. Now we know that it is. Second step is to make sure the driver on her AMD is up-to-date. If that's the issue then she can just update the driver and then turn the GPU back on.

Hannah

My mistake Beth - with Mac it wouldn't be a driver download. Your suggestion that you upgrade to High Sierra may have been the answer. It might solve your problem because the AMD update would be packaged in it.

Thanks,
Hannah

High Sierra still comes with a boatload of problems, far as reading here and a couple other places goes. I'd recommend checking to see if she doesn't have the latest update to Sierra. And make sure she can back out of High Sierra if she does update and it doesn't fix anything, but breaks a thing or two.

Hate to be a Negative Nelly, but it's awfully hard to keep reading about people having to do clean installs, live with this and that not working, all because they ran to High Sierra like it would fix anything. It's a gamble, not necessarily a fix, especially with the way Apple updates (or doesn't update) our video drivers.

Hi Hannah -

I see where you are going with the High Sierra update, but I agree with Cristen...I haven't heard one good thing about High Sierra. I have been reading up on it and it doesn't seem safe. I believe I do have the latest Sierra update, I have: 10.12.6 (16G1114)

It is interesting...PS CC 2017 runs a bit better, but it is a bit slow. I think you are probably right about the GPU driver, I sure wish I could just update only the driver. I might be better off with the Graphic Processor off for now, or go back to 2017 for a while until High Sierra gets cleaned up.

Yeah, Thanks Hannah! I really appreciate your help! At least I have an idea what is going on - It was driving me crazy. I have a brand new computer and PS was running slower than my old one. I wish High Sierra was more stable or I would give an update a try!!

Thanks again!

You are a lucky one Stephen! I have heard terrible reports of people having to rebuild their systems, etc with High Sierra. Even a tech at an Apple Distributor near me said it has problems. I am working on three deadlines...I am not risking it right now.

Can’t emphasize this enough. Even when I’m critical of Adobe the responsiveness and open answers are so appreciated. If we’re critical it’s because we use the sw every day and depend on it. It’s the Achilles heal of my job. Thanks Hannah!

You would have a much different perspective if you have been waiting years for a critical feature (more transform warp points!) to be implemented let alone even acknowledged by Adobe.

Yes the request was made 6 years ago, multiple threads were combined into this one.
Not one response from an Adobe representative.
I'd be happy to share any thoughts if it helps get this some attention. Basically transform warp needs a customizable number of control points. Even better would be the ability to warp those points using Bezier curves like the Pen tool.

Yes, this has been asked for for years and years now. Adobe has given us multiple ways to warp, but they're scattered about and finding just the right one that's quick and efficient for the need hasn't always been easy. Today, even remembering the multiple ways for transforming/warping has become difficult.

Think about it. No central location for access to : Adaptive Wide Angle, Perspective Warp, Puppet Warp, Warp, Transform, Free Transform, Perspective Crop, and then there's poor Vanishing Point way out in the hinterlands. And Liquify is yet another form of warping/transforming. Probably the only warp/transform tool that's in the obvious place for it is Text Warp. I think for most of us, all those warps and transformations also translates to a lot of confusion, while the basic Warp doesn't confuse anyone—it just is SO limited.

This is  a reason Warp needs to be more flexible. It's simple, stable, and if it had more anchors (in fact, were more like Gradient Mesh in AI, but for shape) it would be easy to locate, easy to use, and an easy choice to make for many common needs.

And from my limited understanding, the warping engine has been updated (twice?) since being originally implemented in Ps, but hasn't yet made it into the app. The last major update to illustrator has the new version...

Would y'all mind moving your comments and votes about warp to the thread about it? That way the full extent of the demand for that functionality is clear. Every comment and me too vote counts! (When they're in the right thread haha)

My main Apple machine updated itself last night without my permission to High Sierra. It's a Mac Pro with 1TB flash and 2 64GB GPUs. It's started lagging on everything in PS. But it's also lagging on other things. Turned off the GPU and it stopped lagging. I'll be giving Apple a call tomorrow and will likely be much less polite than I am here. They just f*#ed up a $10,000 graphics machine that I count on greatly. The lag is enormous. Hope this helps you, although it doesn't help me at all.

Damn, sorry to hear that Scott!! That sooo sucks!

Thanks for the warning...I will continue to hold off, or at least try to! I don't get how High Sierra updated itself!

Looks like it wasn't High Sierra. It was their security update, 10.12.6. But it did it overnight, and I never allow automatic updates, so I'm not sure what they did. I'm still trying to figure it out. But wow. Anyway, turning GPU acceleration off in PS fixes the issue but then filters and my actions take longer. I feel bad for Adobe having to put with Apple's nonsense.

It might just be the OS indexing your startup drive. Sometimes that process can mess with overall system responsiveness.

17 Messages

Ah...Okay. So, I have 10.12.6. I have a brand new computer, I don't remember updating it to this version...maybe I did, maybe Apple did it on it's own. Overall my computer seems to be okay, but Photoshop was lagging really bad for me too. But, the computer's performance over all was not as fast as I expected for getting a new computer. (24 GB RAM, 3.4 GHz Intel Core i5 iMac. But PS was dragging the worst! It wasn't even usable. So...I am having the exact same problem as you Scott. Turning off GPU Acceleration has helped me too.

SO, Try this!!...just today...Adobe came out with PS CC 19.1 (it was 19.0.1), it said it had bug fixes including for high resolution monitors. So, I tried it...I installed it, turned GPU Acceleration back on and it *seems* to be working better. I am not doing anything intense, but I do have big files open and I am not getting the same slowness (i.e. zoom in & out slowness, turning on and off layers isn't as bad), it is much better. So, I'd recommend trying PS CC 19.1. See if that helps!

I don't know the reason Adobe hasn't implemented this. I've often wondered about that one myself. At a minimum it would be nice if Adobe could acknowledge the request and perhaps state why they haven't done it. But I've worked in SW, at the biggest of them, and I know what triage lists look like. It could be that it's low on the list. It could be that for some reason it's a difficult request to enable for reasons that we might not expect. It could be that it breaks something. But yes, if it's something a lot of people have requested then it would be nice to have more communication from Adobe as to why.

That's why I'm appreciating the efforts I see Adobe putting forth lately, from this forum to the surveys I got after we wall went ape shit over the latest Lightroom changes. Transparency goes a long ways ....

Hannah,

I got an PS CC 2018 update notification yesterday for version 19.1 and...so far, it seems to be helping my sluggish/lagging issues w/o having to upgrade to High Sierra. I haven't done a lot of brush work, but even basic zooming and showing/hiding layers doesn't take forever to display. Just so you know!

Thanks,

I'm experiencing the same 'lag' issue, for the first time ever. However I'm still using PS CS6, and have had nothing to do with PS CC 2018. The lag with the spot healing brush began after upgrading my MacPro (with 20 GB ram) from OS 10.7.5 (Mountain Lion) to OS 10.11.6 (El Capitan). I use a Wacom Intuos 4 tablet.

Given all the comments on this thread blaming PS CC 2018, your thoughts would be very welcome.
Is there a fix for the problem?

Thanks,
Bob
