Photoshop CC 2017.0.0: Issue with exiting (esc) "Text edit" tool

Sometimes when i try to Esc text edit mode (exit and cancel any changes) it somehow freezes text tool and doesn't allow me to exit it completely. None of shortcuts work anymore (Esc; CMD+Enter; Menu panel buttons) so i can't do anything, even save anything, because most of menu items is inactive. Only option is to Force quit PS and start again. Sometimes it happens every 10 edits and i literally need to save my project every time i plan to edit text, because it can freeze anytime.

Problem appears on Photoshop CC 2017.0.0 release Text tool for macOS Sierra 10.12.1.

Hi Klavs,

Sorry for the trouble with exiting text fields. If you're using 2017.0.0, you'll want to update to Photoshop CC 2017.1 which was released earlier this week.

https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/uptodate.html#CheckUpdates

Let us know if that resolves it for you.

Hi. It doesn't resolve problem. I've just experienced it again https://cl.ly/0A2j0V3M0V2U. Using latest version of Photoshop 2017.1.0

If this helps, i noticed, that it happens, while switching (Ctrl+Tab) between different files and copying or editing text. Not sure if thats the case, but i guess its better than nothing :/

Thanks for the added details Klavs, and thanks for updating. Strange that you're seeing this as I am unable to reproduce and I'm not seeing many reports of Type tool freezing.

I would think it may be related to a Font that could be causing the freeze. Have you gone through our Font troubleshooting? https://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/troubleshoot-fonts-mac-os-x.html

Secondarily, have you tried resetting Photoshop's preferences to see if it is something in there? Restore preferences

Let me know how either of those go.

Regards
PG

Well i had this problem on fresh macOS Sierra install (also fresh Photoshop install) 3 month ago and did Font troubleshooting to fix this. No luck!

Hey Klavs,

How many fonts do you have on your system?  What are their sources?  Could you take a look at this link and check the integrity of your font caches?  https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/troubleshoot-fonts-photoshop.html  What you're encountering seems REALLY odd and I play with text all the time, every day.

Thanks,
David

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Photoshop Text Edit bug.

Apparently, on this last update of Photoshop 2017 (macOs Sierra), the text area is causing problems while editing it. I'm losing my work on multiple times due to a huge bug.

Essentially, when I click on a box text, the program is stuck on the edit and can't be canceled or confirmed. Everything else go crazy, the menu icons are disappearing when the mouse go over them, the menu is greyed out, and there's nothing else I can do if not force quit and hope the program will recover the file (not always).

Here's a screen of what is happening:

Just want to chime in. This bug is still happening.
At first I thought it was fonts conflicting from typekit and some old local fonts I have. I threw the old fonts out and restarted and I'm still losing hours of work to this bug.

I'm running Acrobat Pro, DW, Chrome, Spotify, FF, and Word in the background.

Howdy Shaun,

First, the apps in the background are pretty much what I run, 'cept trade DW for Outlook, so I seriously doubt there's any issue there.

What COULD be an issue is your font cache.  I understand that you dumped the old fonts, but did you regenerate your system (and PS) font caches?  If not, you've got two options -- (easy) trash your prefs on launch of PS or (harder) run through the steps found here: https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/troubleshoot-fonts-photoshop.html.

Also, you might want to make sure the version you're running -- could you share the first line of Help > System Info here?

That really SHOULD fix you right up.  If not, please let us know for deeper troubleshooting.

Thanks,
David

Before I trash my prefs, do they get stored in the cloud so I can "re-sync" them? It tends to take a while to rearrange my panels and settings to the way I like them.

FWIW it occurred to me that it locks up when I hit the "esc" hotkey to exit text-editing mode. It's possible the esc key switch is sticking and that could cause all kinds of problems. I replaced the keyboard and haven't had a crash yet, but we'll see.

Howdy Shaun,

Unfortunately, no, your prefs are not stored in the cloud.  You can always make a backup copy of them.

I have encountered this bug numerous times. Usually when editing a text box and switching between applications and then coming back to edit the text. The only other thing I can think is happening is that I am pressing a random keyboard shortcut mistakenly whilst editing the text instead of in another application.

Hi Marc,

Have you been having the bug with 2017?  What OS are you running?  What other apps do you have running?  Any unusual hardware or pointing device (particularly a tablet)?  Have you tried trashing your preferences?  How many fonts do you have on your system?  This info could help figure out the cause...

Thanks,
David

Howdy folks,

So, if you are experiencing this problem, could you please send the file that you were using when the problem appeared as well as your font cache (found at either /Users/[user name]/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Adobe Photoshop CC or \Users\[user name]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CC, CC 2014, or CC 2015) to me at david <dot> mohr <at> adobe <dot> c o m

Thanks,

I have the same issue and have emailed David.

MacOS Sierra (10.12.6)

Photoshop CS 2017.1.1 Release

  • I cannot recall ever having this issue before yesterday.
  • The PSD file I attached was last modified July 13, and I am 100% certain that I have not experienced this problem with this file before.
  • I do not recall whether Photoshop for Mac has been updated since July 13.
  • I opened the PSD today in order to copy some text to a new PSD. My Esc key is set to dismiss text edits. I want to say that each “freeze” I’ve experienced today has to do with me:
    1. Selecting text in PSD File A and copying.
    2. NOT hitting Esc after copying to dismiss the text “edit.”
    3. Switching to PSD File B and attempting to paste into a text box.
    4. From this point on, all that I can do is Force Quit Photoshop. Nothing else works.

Howdy Michael,

Sorry for the lag -- I got pulled onto another project and am just now catching up with the forums.  Unfortunately, I did not get your email -- I believe you Zipped the docs?  Our system doesn't allow zipped docs from outside the company.  Can you resend them unzipped?

Also, what ARE you doing for your step #2?  Using the Cancel button in the Options bar?

Thanks,
David

Hey Michael,

Just following up with you again.  My corporate email won't let me receive a ZIPped file.  Did you ever send a non-ZIPped version?  I didn't seem to receive one.

Thanks,
David

Sorry for my delayed reply, David. My company email must have flagged your earlier message — or I just missed it.

I've re-emailed you the file and my notes. Let me know if you need any other info.

FWIW... I stopped use Mac Photoshop CS 2017 because of this problem. I’ve been using 2015 instead.

I keep experiencing this same bug, it is really annoying. Sometimes I get PS to show me the recovered files after the forced quit, sometimes I don't. Is there a way I can make sure that PS recovers the files I was working on when the bug happens? As I am typing this I have PS stuck on the backbground with a lot of unsaved progress about to be lost :(

Hi Olli,

Well, ideally, I'd like to get to the bottom of the cause of this bug and just make it go away!  What OS are you using?  What other files do you have open?  Is your application frame on or off?  What other apps do you have open?  What kind of mice or tablets are you using?

Meanwhile, if you go to Preferences > File Handling, at the top right, you'll see Automatically Save Recovery Information Every: with a default setting of 10 Minutes.  You can decrease this to 5 Minutes, if you'd like.  Then, next time the app hangs, wait five minutes and you should be okay.  But again, my goal is to solve the bug hanging the app, so any help along those lines would be most welcome.

Thanks,
David

Hey David,

I'll try to provide some info.

OSX 10.11.6 (15G31) (El Capitan)

I Usually have around three to four files open. Most of them have artboards. Most of the time I have hidden the menus with F. I do skip around a lot. In this last instance, and if I recall correctly also in others I did have the menus visible. The one constant I can think of is that when this happens the text is inside a text container.

Other apps running at the same time:

Slack
Skype
Airmail
Chrome
Finder

At the moment I am using an Asus  mouse that came with my PC, but thew bug has occurred when I've been using my standard logitech m310.

The font I was using when the bug occurred was Roboto. Other font's in the same file were
Geogrotesque, Nunito and Lato.

I have a few third party extensions:
Zeplin and Griddify

If I remember correctly this started on the previous version of PS. Or maybe the one before that. So this is quite new for me.

Some keyboard shortcut to menus worked during this freeze, for example I was able to open the preferences dialog.  I made a change in to the autosave time and after committing the changes the program crashed completely.

If there is anything else I can tell you, please let me know. Would love for this bug to disappear.

Howdy Olli,

So something is happening on your machine that is NOT happening on mine.  I've been trying for some time to track down this bug, but with no success.  Now, that said, I do have a couple of ideas what MIGHT be going on.

Now, you're running two third party extensions that I am not.  Could you do me (and potentially yourself) a favor?  Could you try using Photoshop for a while with both Zeplin and Griddify removed and disabled?  I'm asking cuz not only do I not use either, but the problem with ESC appears to be tied to the app getting into a confused state.  If one or both of these apps at any point intercepts the app when you're editing text, it might accidentally mess up the modal state the app goes into then, making it (appear to) hang.  When menus are hidden or the app frame is off, this seems to happen more frequently, and surprise, surprise, you mention that you're in full screen mode.

Anyway, try that for several days and see if the problems disappear.  I'd really love to hear what you come up with.

Thanks,
David

Hey,

I will uninstall those plugins. It's a bit tricky though since I am in the middle of a large web project and Zeplin is used to upload the designs for dev handovers. But I will install it back when I do a hand over and then take it out again.

I can't be exactly sure but these issues might have actually started in the same time I installed the Zeplin exporter plugin. It will be interesting to try this out.

In the mean time could you please fix the bug where art boards don't render properly :)
Sometimes when I have a few art boards and I move stuff around in them they just turn to complete white and nothing renders on them.

Olli

Howdy Olli,

Thanks for trying this.  I hope the results match what I'm expecting...8-)

As for Artboards, I actually do not work on them and it's best to have one issue per thread, so please post that problem in its own conversation so that the appropriate party can follow up with you.

Thanks,
David

Hi guys – I’ve figured out WHEN the issue occurs.
I am working on multiple monitors (3) and whenever I edit text on one monitor and then (while still editing the text) click with the type tool into document on another screen, the issue appears.

Is it the same in your case?

Hi Guys – is here someone from Adobe?
This issue is ABSOLUTELY THE MOST ANNOYING cos’ I keep loosing my work.
I mentioned that the bug appears while switching among documents on different screens – it’s not right. But I found that the bug is triggered by "ESC" key. Not every time but it’s definitely the trigger.

Can you solve it PLEASE?

Working with Photoshop is real pain in the ass since this bug.

:(

Adobe released a new version of PS and removed Device preview. So basically  if you want to use PS to design for anything but monitors you are stuck with this bug forever.  Really really bad move Adobe. It's truly a sad day.

this bug still happens in cc18 unrelated to device preview

Hi Idan and Alice,

What are you seeing in Photoshop 19.0 or 19.0.1 when you click ESC to confirm/quit a text edit?  This problem should have been solved for single monitors.  (I'll look into the multiple monitor scenario tomorrow).

Thanks,
David

So, what's going on with the multiple Monitor issue? It's tripping me out atm. Of course, auto save didn't work, so I can redo everything. But I'll do it in Illustrator CS4, which is still working reliably. Like PS Cs4.
Edit: I was trying to use the Glyphs Panel (the main reason for getting into PS CC). It didn't work, I could not choose alternate characters like in Illustrator, and afterwards I had to kill the PS task. On 2 monitors, Win 8.1.

This happens to me daily now and single- and dual-monitors and it is beyond frustrating.  It's a software bug and it's in the Adobe forums too.

I took the time to register because I think I've found a way to remedy this for now without force closing Photoshop.

When you can't ESC out of a text box or even use CMD + RETURN, then do the following:

Use your mouse/trackpad and click on the MOVE tool.  Then hit CMD + RETURN.  It will pop-up as a program error, thus resetting the box and escaping out.

Hope that helps.  It's not a solve for the root of the problem, but for now, it has helped me from force quitting.  Spread the word and make sure Adobe fixes this!

Hi David,

Are you using the latest version of Photoshop.  This problem should have been solved for single-monitor setups.

Thanks,
David

YES! This solution works great in Photoshop 20.0.0, though I couldn't get it to work for me in previous releases. And yes, sadly this issue persists in the latest update of Photoshop 2018
