Photoshop CC 2017.0.0: Issue with exiting (esc) "Text edit" tool

Sometimes when i try to Esc text edit mode (exit and cancel any changes) it somehow freezes text tool and doesn't allow me to exit it completely. None of shortcuts work anymore (Esc; CMD+Enter; Menu panel buttons) so i can't do anything, even save anything, because most of menu items is inactive. Only option is to Force quit PS and start again. Sometimes it happens every 10 edits and i literally need to save my project every time i plan to edit text, because it can freeze anytime. 

Problem appears on Photoshop CC 2017.0.0 release Text tool for macOS Sierra 10.12.1.

Yeah, this bug is outrageously annoying. I habitually save constantly since this started happening but it still probably ends up costing me about 30 minutes a day spent recreating work I've already done.

I'm running the most up to date version of 2017. I won't upgrade to the latest CC because Adobe removed Device Preview in the latest release which I need and use every day. Is it possible they're just not going to patch the 2017 release with the fix or can someone confirm that it isn't fixed and is still happening in the 2018 CC as well?

Hi Jed,

For single monitor setups, this problem should be solved.  There were reports that the problem was still coming up on multiple monitor setups, but no one has confirmed that (and we can't repro internally), so that's unclear.

Well, I'm using a single monitor and can confirm that this issue still persists. I'm running PS 2017.1.3 on mid 2014 Macbook Pro with macOS Sierra 10.12.6. Bug occurs literally every day, often multiple times a day.

Hi Jed,

Sorry, let me rephrase that.  This should be solved with PS 19.1.  I understand that you don't want to upgrade, but I don't see this fix being applied to an older version.

If you've got a compelling user story, however, please share.  I can see what I can do.

Well, I finally bit the bullet and upgraded to CC 2018 (19.1.3) but this bug still persists. It doesn't happen as often, I've been using it without issue for a couple weeks now, but the bug occurred again just now.

Hi Jed,

I would be curious to hear any and all details you can share.  We haven't heard about this bug since we released 19.1.  If you're still getting it, we'd like to track down why.

Before you said that the bug happened every day, multiple times.  Now it's after a couple of weeks?  Have you just seen it the once or multiple times?

What kinds of things are you doing when you encounter this issue?  What other plugins do you have installed?  What other apps do you have running at the same time?

Yes, I upgraded to 2018 a couple of weeks ago and I haven't encountered the bug again until today. So this is the first time it has occurred in CC 2018.

I'm still not 100% sure specifically what causes it. It seems to happen when I have a text field selected and then click somewhere outside of it, either in the artboard or on a palette. But I haven't been able to reproduce it on purpose.

As far as other software, when it happened today I didn't have much else running; Apple Mail, Slack, Wunderlist and Messages. However, the most logical culprit - if any - is probably my font management software, Fontbase. Could be that, but when I was having issues with CC 2017, I encountered this bug before I started using Fontbase, so that seems unlikely.

As far as plugins go, I haven't installed any for Photoshop 2018. I also removed all of my preferences and made sure it was a fresh install when I updated.

I'm using macOS High Sierra (10.13.4) on a mid-2014 Macbook Pro Retina.

Howdy Jed,

There was an issue in earlier releases with ESC, but that's been fixed for some time.  It wouldn't be impossible, however, for this bug to have multiple triggers.  So after you repro this issue, try with Fontbase off and see if it goes away.  I would like to track down the causes and address everything that we can.

I was able to solve this problem recently. I'll try to keep it short.

TL;DR —
  • I'm running MacOS High Sierra 10.13.4 and Photoshop CC 2018 19.1.3 on a new MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2017).
  • Under Photoshop CC Preferences > Performance > I checked "Use Graphics Processor". Clicked Advanced Settings > selected Drawing Mode Normal and checked the top 4 choices and unchecked "Use native operating system GPU acceleration." 
  • I do not know what would happen if I checked all 5 Advanced Settings or some other combination.
  • I can confirm with 100% certainty that the freeze upon exiting text edit happened BEFORE I changed the above settings and went away AFTER I changed them.

Longer explanation —
  • Scroll up to see my posts detailing previous problems.
  • I was running an older 15" MacBook Pro at work until 2 weeks ago. I don't recall the exact model. It was at least a year old, likely two. It had MacOS Sierra (10.12) with the latest updates. I had both Photoshop 2015 and 2017/18 installed. I ran 2015 almost exclusively because it didn't exhibit this bug we're discussing.
  • IT gives me a new 2017 MacBook Pro two weeks ago with a clean install of MacOS. I install clean versions of Adobe CC apps (notably Photoshop 2015 and 2018).
  • Knowing the possible issues of bringing over bad settings, I still chose to manually copy over my Photoshop 2015 and 2018 preferences to the new laptop.
  • I open up two files in Photoshop 2018 and IMMEDIATELY experience the exiting text tool bug. 
  • I Force Quit and reopen PS 2018. Knowing that I have more computing and graphics power with the new MacBook, I change the Graphics settings noted above.
  • Quit, restart, and everything has been running smoothly ever since. I'm at 2 weeks now without a exiting-text-edit freeze. Hallelujah!

Hey José,

Could you tell me about your system setup?  What OS are you running?  How many monitors?  What kind of keyboard / tablet / mouse?  Other apps open?  Size of the text blocks you're dealing with?  Size of the files you're dealing with?  Have you tried Michael Chang's suggestion?

I've been unable to repro this bug since we fixed it for 2017.  This leads me to believe there's one more element involved triggering it.

I work with a MacBook Pro connected to two monitors. The keyboard is from an old iMac connected by cable and the mouse is the "Magic Mouse" from Apple.



I have tried the solution of Michael Chang. But I do not think to remove"Use native operating system GPU acceleration." Be the correct solution. I decided to buy this Mac for the GPU and thinking that it could help me in my work with large Photoshop files. Maybe I'm wrong and photoshop does not need this to work well.
I'll try while I can not find another solution.

Trabajo con tres monitores y en ocasiones tengo abierto illustrator o After effects. Utilizo acciones para algunos trabajos, pero no mucho.

Tienes este problema cuando tu trabajas solemente con Photoshop?  Yo sé que no es idéal, pero yo quiero limitar dónde puede estar el error y con cual constelaciones de cosas.

As mentioned in a comment above, I've run into this issue yet again in the latest update to Photoshop. I'm running Photoshop 20.0.0 (CC 2018). Thankfully David Kuo's workaround helped so at least there's a way out of it without losing work.

Wow, it's absolutely incredible that this bug still exists in Photoshop CC 2021 (version 22.0.0, single monitor setup). Thankfully, David Kuo's workaround still works as well.

It's long-standing bugs like these that make me question why I'm still paying for such poorly maintained software when a variety of superior alternatives exist.
