Photoshop CC 2017: Unable to create Animation GIF

I downloaded the new version of PS CC. I followed a tutorial called Create Animation GIF's that was available when I opened the application. My version did not contain the same tools in the timeline panel that were in the tutorial.

Hi Kathryn,

There have been no substantive changes to the Timeline panel in quite a while.  All the tools found in previous versions should be there.  What are you unable to find?

Thanks,
David

I cannot create an animated GIF from as sequence of JPGs in Photoshop 2017.1.1 20170425.r.252. I have followed the Adobe tutorials to display the Timeline window, having loaded the various JPG files as layers. The tutorial says to select "Create Frame Animation" instead of "Create Video Timeline".
I am then supposed to select the Timeline menu icon on the right, and choose "Make Frames From Layers."

My version of Photoshop, however, has a bug, since I do no get the menu displayed above from the Adobe tutorial when I choose the Timeline menu icon. I get the following menu instead.

The menu above for my Photoshop's Timeline window for "Create Frame Animation" appears to be the same menu that is displayed when the "Create Video Timeline" option is selected.

Therefore, I am unable to access the menu options for "Create Frame Animation" and am unable to create an animated GIF with the most recent version of Photoshop CC.  Please help me get around this apparent bug.  Thanks.  Doug Lang

Doug, I am having this exact same problem. I don't see the answer in the responses below. How did you solve this?

It is confusing! When see the Create Video Timeline option, select the drop-down arrow option to display the Create Frame Animation option in the drop down. However, it isn’t enough to just choose the Create Frame Animation in the drop down menu. You have to click on the option Create Frame Animation as well, which will then create the first frame—then select all your layers and now you should see the right menu to make Frames From Layers. It is sort of a double selection...first the drop down menu item and then clicking on it. Good luck! Doug

Thank you for the quick response Douglas! I'm hoping I'm just blind to this...I have the dropdown in the middle of the Timeline window at the bottom. Where do I find the second Create Frame Animation to select? I have the same issue you mention, where the menu inside of Timeline starts with Go To instead of New Frame...

For a company that makes software for designers, this is really an un-intuitive design! In addition to choosing "Make Frame Animation" from the drop-down, you have to then ALSO click on the words "Make Frame Animation" to switch the menus to those shown in the tutorial. So awkward!

It is a bit confusing. In the middle of the Timeline layer, if you have nothing there yet, you should see Create Video Timeline, with Create Frame Animation in the drop down. When you click on Create Frame Animation, it creates the first frame—then  select all your layers and now you should see the right menu to make Frames From Layers. See if this doesn't provide the missing bits from your tutorial.

Dear Cristen,
By selecting the Create Frame Animation in the drop down, it is not creating any new frames. I am still in trouble in making an animated GIF in the photoshop. Need some more clarification and help from you.

Hello, Mr Hasan
I found that in addition to selecting the option "Create Frame Animation" in the drop down menu, I had to click on that menu option. That allowed me to start creating the animated GIF as Christen described. Good luck! Doug

I am trying this procedure and there is no drop down to select "Create Frame Animation". I followed the instructions to the point of opening the timeline window and there is no dropdown other than on the right which does not have that selection. ??

You're showing me a set of frames already created. Create Frame Animation, although it sounds like it, doesn't create the animation itself. It just sets you up to create the animation. Here you have your frames created and a duration for each frame already set. All you need to do is press play to see the animation.

In the very beginning, when all you have are layers in the Layers panel you want to animate, and an empty Timeline window open, you can select Create Frame Animation in the empty window drop down list in the middle of the timeline. If it's already selected (it remembers the last choice between video and frame animation), you don't need to select it, but in both cases, you then click on it and the first frame is entered into the Timeline with a 0s duration, and now you're ready to add frames, tween, whatever else you need to do to create the animation.

I'm glad that little bit helped. It's not at all obvious in the interface how you're supposed to proceed at that point.

Howdy Nikhil,

You're not seeing the button because you already have three states in your Timeline.  If you didn't, it would look like this:

Hope that helps,
David

follow instructions in this video.

on timeline panel you have to actually click on the "create frame animation". not over the triangle next to that button, but over the button. after that, you will find "make frames from layers" in the timeline panel menu. that worked for me. hope helps you too.

when i do this - i don't get the menu that says make frames - i get one that says among other things  loop playback, allow frame skipping, show, enable timeline shortcut keys, etc
so i can't create a frame at all

There is NO "Create Frame Animation" button in the latest version (20.0.6 - 2019) in the timeline panel. The panel seems to be minimized or so but can not be increased

Maybe some of you will like the workaround that seems to work: Open a new document and open the Timeline panel in it. The button appears in the blank document. All you have to do is move the existing layers from the other file.

Important! You have to push the button first...

I cant seem to get my animation working. First of all I don't have a "timeline" option, but I have something called animation. But that tool simply collect all the layers in ONE stack, and not different frames, so they're just layered on top of eachother and not 'next to each
other' in the animation tool. I tried to follow the instructions, https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/how-to/make-animated-gif.html?origref=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.dk%... but after step one I cant follow anymore, because I don't have the timeline.
