Photoshop CC 2015: Select and Mask problems

The previous mask adjustment window was showing it's age, but worked pretty well. The new Select and Mask window is virtually unusable at the moment. If I use a radius above .5 px the mask goes haywire and seemingly randomly cuts through the mask in quantities much larger than the radius specified. If I do a radius under .5 px the edge detection appears not to work at all. The smart radius automatically pumps the radius up to 10px which renders the tool unusable. The only things that work are the global refinements I think. Is this expected behavior? Please say no!!

Here is how the mask function used to work, nice smooth, predictable and highly modifiable line profiles:

if you don't mind, I have the same situation with select and mask. I made a video showing the problem.

Hi John,

Thanks for posting. This isn't quite the same issue as mine; using the Smart Radius with the Refine Edge Brush Tool in the previous version wasn't a good combination either. Refine Edge Brush has, in my experience, is best used at the end, after the clean lines had been defined (like her arm, etc.)
However, it is hard to tell what was going on in the video since you didn't have "overlay" or something similar in the view mode; i.e. it was hard to see what happened when you clicked "smart radius." What part is causing the issue?

In the previous version, after making a quick selection, I went to refine edge brush and used it to select the hair which I always ended up with a great selection. In the new select and mask following the same method, the refine edge brush "Removes" ares that are pre selected by the selection tool.  The old refine edge "Never" did this. At the end you can see her left arm was erased from the selection.

Oh, ok, so slightly different issue.

Yes, it would be nice to have an option to "add" or "subtract" (or auto) from the selection via the edge brush, like other selection tools have, to help the algorithm's judge what is background and foreground.

John,

I hope this is not the way you would work on this image, but only the way to show the issue. Your initial selection is way too small on the left side of the image. Then your refine brush is way too large. Why do you brush into areas, where there shouldn ́t be anything refined? Don ́t brush into areas that just should stay selected. I ́m pretty sure, the new tool would do a great job on that portrait, if you do it right. I ́ve done many selections similar to this one and it did a great job.

I know that the tool has lots of bugs, but you did not use it in the right way.

If you watch any Demo by the professionals like julianne kost, she and other pros state that the initial selection should be on the inside edge and not to select any areas that are empty. Which I did!

If you know of a better way to work with the tool, it would be appreciated by myself and others so we can learn.

I instantly experienced exactly the same suite of problems you're describing upon upgrading and trying the new tool/workspace. I kept trying it again and again with different images thinking that there's no possible way that it's so completely dysfunctional relative to the most recent version. I've gone bonkers (doing all the same radius changes) trying to fix it — and the radii seem to be unrelated to the sixe of the effect.

I had to remove the upgrade and go back to 2015 so I can use Refine Edge...

You've done a great job describing this. It's crazy. I'd love someone to explain why this tool is working so erratically and poorly.

I heard from a few staff members that it is being Improved in the next bug patch. it is my understanding that 2015.5 is a re-engineered beast and bugs will pop up. In the mean time, make sure your video drivers are up to date as it does help some. Whenever I used Select and mask at first, it crashed Photoshop 2015.5 completely.

John,

can you provide a link to comments from staff members about improvements?

same as with the LR import dialog.

adobe insists that the changes make sense and are way better.
yet a great percentage of customers just HATE it.

the new mask tools is BROKEN and adobe won ́t admit it.

some paid employees do videos that praise the new tool, but reality looks different.

So I've been using a previous version of Photoshop for all my masking since the new release... ugh. I was really hoping the latest bug fix would address this but it doesn't seem to have changed anything regarding this issue.
One thing I've noticed is the new Select & Mask does a really nice job on large, fat, simple masks... both in finding the edge and blending to the texture of the edge. Anything with meticulous, technical detail it does an absolutely abysmal job... really really bad. So I work in the new version, and then any time I have to use the select and mask, I save, open it again in the last photoshop version, mask, save, quit re-open in newest version..... Please please please prioritize this issue, this is killing my

Original Selected Mask

"Edge Detection" at default values

2px Radius

LATEST UPDATE:

No Change. Radius 1px

PREVIOUS REFINE EDGE RESULTS
This is how it used to work.. beautifully, magically

If you could give an update on expectations that would be great! Thanks guys

One more example clearly shows a character of the problem, it appears to use an enormous radius and an amount of smoothing no matter what is adjusted:

I ́m so with You on this. Before it was easy and magic, I could make very good selections very quickly and now I struggle with every photo, it takes a lot to much time to get an acceptable (not good) effect. It ́s just one example her. Instead of good selection I get extra "spots" and no settings of pen, radius, or shift edge helps...
