Photoshop CC 2015: Checkerboard preview for transparency in Thumbnails and Artboards are gone

Checkerboard preview in Thumbnails and on Artboard for transparency are gone when using Artboards in Photoshop cc2015.
Instead of showing a checkerboard for transparency there is only a white background.

I have this problem too in Photoshop CC 2015.1.2 20160113.r.355

...wow, crazy. They promised they'd add settings back, but nothing yet.

It's silly that they would remove this feature and yet retain the Preferences pane.

I don't even know why they would remove it - because you can mimic disabling the Transparency Grid anyway by changing the Grid Color setting.

I'm very frustrated with Adobe on this. The Transparency Grid is essential if you're doing UI work or working on 2D game art. Heck, it's also needed if you're doing anything for After Effects too.
