Please install 22.1.1 which was released late last night. It contains a fix for program errors.

@JeffreyTranberry

I have downloaded version 22.1.1 and it does not fix the issue. When I click save as nothing happens. This happens with every file I try. Also file - open / file - new wont work

How can we fix this ?

I have done all of the steps I can think of.

What OS? Save As? Save for Web? Where are you saving? (internal drive, external drive, network drive or server?

Hello Jeff! I noticed this issue when I drag select an entire layer, transform and then try to save... Hope that helps.. And I am using the recently updated Photoshop v 22.1

This is happening to me too! I have been editing files from Lightroom, then opening them into photoshop. I am adding a layer to the image and then clicking save so that my CR2 file saves back to Lightroom as a tiff file. I don't want to Save As as this will disrupt my workflow in Lightroom. What's going on and how can I fix it?

Prior to this issue, I have had lots of issues when using Photoshop. Computer lagging, and not waking with mouse shake or key presses when it's been in sleep mode. I have to do a hard shutdown, which is extremely unproductive and risky as I don't want to lose files. Now I can't complete work at all when I'm on a deadline.

When searching through forums I have come across suggestions surrounding VRAM, GPU. The problem occurred when I was running Catalina and Photoshop 2020 and 2021. I've just updated OS tonight to OS Big Sur and still running version 22.1.0 of Photoshop 2021 and 2 images saved normally and then the problem came back.

Please help!

After the latest update of Photoshop (22.1.0) on my Windows 10 computer, I am getting error messages like this:
Could not save "Holiday.psd" because of a program error.
Merging layers gives the same error message. Save as any other file type gives the same error message.  I am saving on a local hard drive with plenty of room.
My workaround has been to turn off the visibility of all layers except the background. That allows me to save. Then I turn on each layer and save until I find a layer that breaks things. I leave that layer off. Sometimes when I delete and recreate that "bad" layer, Photoshop allows me to save.
I have updated Windows 10 and updated all Adobe products. I have a lot of free disk space and RAM.

@John_Mccormick Thank you John, that was very useful. I was able to save my work.

I also identified the guilty layers but it is really puzzling a they are banal radial gradients (color to transparency) that I rasterized.

My guess is that the transparency is provoking this but it is puzzling none the less.

This has happened occasionally in the last few days/ week in other files. In one case that I remember I reduced the file size and was able to save it. In this case I couldn't do that so your suggestion was bery useful.

Any ideas why this is happening, anyone?

Thanks, N

@Nuno Almeida  I'm glad it worked for you.  My offending layer was a color fill layer with a mask.  I have no idea why this is happening.  I haven't seen a peep out of Adobe on all the flurry of posts here.  It makes me wonder if they are even aware of the problem.  Should I need to do anything important,  I will roll back to an earlier version of Photoshop.

@John_Mccormick

For me it saved the work, but did not solve the problem. I have the file linked to other one and I need the layers to be correctly saved.

However, in the last couple of hours, our thread was merged with a much larger one.

In one comment, I found out that if you turn the layer off, save, close, reopen, turn layers on and save it works... go figure...

Another had an apparently more stable solution that I have not tried or researched.

here's the permalink (I hope it works)

@John_Mccormick thanks for workaround!

1) Hidding layers expect Background

2) Save to PSD

3) Close file and open it again

4) Enabling layers again

did the trick and I could export photo.

You wrote, in part, the following: " I haven't seen a peep out of Adobe on all the flurry of posts here.  It makes me wonder if they are even aware of the problem."

There has been a great deal of response from Adobe, posted on his thread and others. Perhaps you should go read that .

After latest update of Photoshop, I am getting this error message. Not always, but about 50% cases of saving file ends with this. Solution is to try save again (sometimes it saves file after 10 attempts). Its really annoying.

I have updated Windows 10, updated all Adobe products. I have a lot of free disk space. This issue started right after updating Photoshop to latest version.

Are you saving to the local drive, server or external/remote drive or NAS?

Anything in the Program error log (PSErrorLog.txt)?

Locate the program error log on your system here:

If you go to Preferences > Performance... and uncheck "Legacy Compositing" does it save without error?

If that area is VRAM, and since Photoshop uses the GPU more than just about any other program, it COULD be memory... Worth testing theory at least! Replacing RAM is not that expensive

Is there any other information, which I can provide except of PSErrorLog output? I am back from vacation, working on client photos, trying to save file:

Clik on save button -> Error -> Ok
Clik on save button again -> Error -> Ok
Clik on save button again -> Error -> Ok
Clik on save button again -> Error -> Ok
Clik on save button again -> Error -> Ok
Clik on save button again -> File is saved successfully

Its random, sometimes it saves on first try, sometimes it takes more than 10 attempts. There at least two more persons with same issue.

I have been seeing this problem a few times lately too. As David wrote it really happens randomly without any discernable pattern. I don't use Google Drive, I don't get any helpful error logs and it happens with both Legacy Compositing turned on and off. I am on macOS 10.14.6 with Photoshop 21.2.0.

32 Messages

I've been getting these errors also, seems to be since 21.2 patch. It seems random and I just keep trying and it'll eventually save. I did have one that just simply cancel out and stay at saving 0%. I had to dupe the file and save it separately in order not to lose progress.

going to try legacy composition as you suggested above.
I do also have Google Drive installed, saving to the same local drive.

I noticed that at least for me, this problem usually happens after working for a while on a project I already have saved, and it can be avoided by using Save As and saving to a new file. Anyone else have the same experience?

Yes, I can confirm that it can be avoided by using Save As.

I have the same issue after the upgrade. Downgraded from 21.2.1 to 21.2.0. Same, can't save with the same name. Need to keep creating new name like +1, +2.... annoying for sure.

I also have the same issue... open file make a change... won't save "program error". I have tried turning off "Enable Generator" in preferences/plugins as some have suggested – unfortunately did not work.

No, I have same error message even if I use Save As. Even when I save file for first time.

Its 3 weeks since I see error message for almost every day. Terrible experience. Today my PC frozen during editing photo, after reseting PC I found all my Photoshop settings (workspace, actions, brushes...) are gone and reverted to default. I solve this problem with restoring files from AppData folder from yesterdays backup.

But Adobe, this is terrible and very frustrating experience. I am paying for your subscription for long time and there are so many bugs and issues. Only reason why I stay is Lightroom. But after I will find better alternative, I will cancel subscription immidiately. Affinity photo can replace PS and is way cheaper and works without such lame errors. :(

My issue was different than yours (not on PC) but I thought it would be worth putting in the thread that I solved it by reading into the known issues with PS:
https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/known-issues.html
For me, it was a problem with Photoshop on mac Catalina writing data to an exfat formatted SSD. They say they're resolving it with Apple

I unfortunately get this frequently too.  This new Photoshop version seems really buggy.  I'm on a 2015, 27" iMac using Mojave.  If I turn off all the layers in Photoshop it saves fine, that's the only work around I've been able to figure out.

Same problem here after latest PS CC update. Save As doesn't work w/ keyboard shortcuts or by menu pulldown. Though PS for a few milliseconds acts as if it is working by greying out all the other menu pulldown function choices.
Win 10 Home 64 bit (w/ latest OS updates)
Would like to SaveAs PSD instead of resorting to exporting PNG, JPEG etc.

Edited to add update (below):

Update:
Later the same day had a 2 hour online chat with the last hour being a PC takeover session w/ Adobe tech support levels 1 and 2. They eventually agreed that going back to an older version where everything works (21.1.3) is the best solution. Their final claim is that the 2 year old NVidia Titan Xp doesn't support the latest PS version. Seems to be Adobe's default response when a problem happens with PS. The Titan Xp meets all of Adobe's published requirements for a graphics card in the Adobe link tech support provided.
They refuse to believe that the changes Adobe made to the PS file save feature in 21.2 and later has anything to do with the file related functions no longer working. They don't submit a problem report to the developers, so we'll wait until one of the developers looks at it themselves and fixes the problems.

PS 21.2.x also has these issues for me:
File ->New doesn't work
File ->Open doesn't work the first time PS is opened after resetting the preferences to default, but after dropping a file onto PS to open, it the next time PS is opened File-> Open command works.
The behavior is not the symptom of a graphics card incompatibility.

Are you saving to a local/internal drive? Do you get the error with all file types? Which of the following ways do get the error?

File > Save

File > Save As

File > Export > Export As

File > Export > Save For Web

I'm saving to local drive. mostly via save. sometimes save-as but that gives errors also.

I don't recall whether or not export produces the error or not and I never use save for web so I cannot say. I will let you know next time I need to export.

thanks for looking into this, Jeffrey.

Another customer says further up that when she hits this, if she hides all the layers it saves. (that might be a good clue) If that's the case, would it possible to get a file that give you a program error?

Sr. Product Manager, Adobe Digital Imaging

All of my files are confidential design work for clients, so I am unable to share. However, the errors are sporadic but happens to all my work. Every time it happens I just hit save again and it'll save, sometimes I have to do that a few times but it eventually saves.

I'll try and pay attention and see if it throws an error when I save flattened/indexed files to see if it's a layer problem.

If it helps at all, all my work is of very large dimensions at 240 or 300 dpi. Not sure if that's relevant or not.

I'm on OSX Catalina 10.15.7 with Photoshop 21.2.4 but it's been happening for a while now. Pretty sure it's happening across multiple patches of both the OS and Photoshop. I wish I remember when it started.

I have the same problem for the last 6 months. I am using the latest version of Photoshop on a Mac running Catalina. Saving to a Synology NAS drive. The problem is intermittent but persistent when it does occur. I don't believe it has anything to with file size. When it occurs if I login to the NAS drive via a browser I can see a temp file with the name "Adobe Photoshop 2020119172458540159" if I delete that file and the original file via the NAS browser interface I can then save the file normally. However if I make a change and try to save again, I get the some program error. I believe it has to do with file naming as it seems to happen mostly when I am saving over files that I have recently saved with a new name but not closed yet.

Here is my fix, I'm on macOS Catalina V10.15.6, PS V22. I gave PS Full Disk Access and restarted the system, seems like it has fixed the problem for now.

You can go to System preferences > Security & Privacy > Full Disk Access ( You can find it on the left side pane > and add PS to the list by pressing the small + icon you can find on the bottom of the left-side pane.

Also, you need to unlock the privacy pane if you have not already by clicking the padlock on the left corner to make any changes to this section.

Hope this helps someone and Good Luck.

I have the same issue, and apart from Photoshop I use 'Sketch' and I realised that if I restart my Mac (iMac Pro)nit saves perfectly and once I switch on 'Sketch' app it stops saving .. even if I quit the app I still need to give my mac a Restart to save normally! And I'm saving directly on google drive. Super annoying!

Okay so I was reading all the comments and someone mentioned to give full disk access to the photoshop. I checked and it was checked already but Google Drive wasn't checked. I did that and till now its working! even when Sketch is open!

So maybe you need to check where are you saving and make sure it has full fisk access. Goodluck!

Saving a file in Photoshop to a folder accessed on Box Drive (which is actually on the local disc) results in a "Could not save 'XXXXX.psd' because of a program error." A copy of the file in question is created with the name "Adobe Photoshop 2021XXXXXXXXXXYYYYY", the Xs in this case being a repeated sequence of numbers (if the error is experienced multiple times with multiple files being created) and the Ys being unique numbers.

Attempting a Save As... without changing the file name results in the same error.

I believe this problem first appeared in the 2020 version and is still present in the 2021 version. All other Creative Cloud applications I use work fine with Box Drive.

Thanks.

The same problem here after the last Photoshop 21.2.4. Save as W / Keyboard shortcut or menu pulldown does not work. Although the PS works for a few milliseconds as it works by trimming all other menu pulldown function preferences.

Hi - Just thought I'd jump on board since this has been an issue since I updated my PS. I'm on a iMac 27", Catalina. I save all of my work to a Synology and never had an issue with saving photoshop files until the last couple of weeks. I have to resave as a new PS file with #1, #2 etc. I can save it as a flattened tif without any issues, but it won't let me save the original PS file. I also noticed in the thread that someone posted that their menus were greyed out when they first opened the browser. I have the same issue. The files still open and darken once I click on them, but just thought it was odd. I checked the photoshop error message as suggested and there were nothing there to look at. The last error message logged in was in 2015. So that didn't help. I work on larger files and I just hate resaving all these files and taking up so much space. Thanks for any help you can offer.

This is exactly the same problem I am seeing writing to a Synology drive. It doesn't seem to matter if I am connected via AFP or SMB and it does not occur with any other software, just Photoshop and only the latest couple of versions. It seems that PS cannot successfully remove the previous version when saving. It gets all the way to the end of the process and shows an error.

I noticed in the threads that people said that it was happening sporadically for them. For me, it's every time. I haven't tried the "hit resave 10 times" - so I don't know if that would solve the issue. But there obviously is something amiss with the new PS. When I try to save, it doesn't show an attempt to process the file, I get an automatic "program error" message.

I just tried to save my PS file on an ExFat drive and on a OS Journaled. It worked only on the OS Journaled without the error message. I opened up a version of the same file from each external. It only saved without issue on the Journaled Drive.

Anyone else try this?

Thanks Julian

@julian_putnam

I had this problem - in my case the "Save As" did work.

Deleting the file metadata and then saving in a different name solved the problem!

Hope this helps!

I have had the same problem since Photoshop 2020. I am working on a Mac with Catalina saving files to a Synology NAS drive. We work from several workstations running different age software and never had a problem with any software until this Photoshop 2020 issue cropped up on Catalina. For me I solved it by making sure my computer was connected to the NAS via AFP instead of SMB. Apparently it connected via SMB by default, once switched to AFP the problem has completely disappeared.

Hi All

Thank you to all of your wonderful people who have reached out. It's the old adage of you bring your car to the mechanic because it's making that clunky noise, and you can't get it to make the noise when you need it to. Well, I don't know if there was an update that I installed that fixed the problem, but I haven't had any issues with the "Save" basically since I first posted. I kept waiting for it to happen again, and it hasn't. I'd like to think that one of Adobe's updates fixed it. I'm still holding my breath, but so far......

Thank you all for your suggestions. I will go here first for future issues since there seems to be a vast amount of PS knowledge floating around this site.

Hi @iris_burstein  Thank you for the suggestion.  I'm running into this issue lately.  I'm on MacBook Pro using PS 2020.  I don't believe we need to Save As though.  Please suggest if there is another alternative.  Thank you!

I am also experiencing the same problem. The only way around this for me is to Save As and rename or switch to psd instead of tiff or the other way around. All I'm doing is R/Ting into Lr which I've never had a problem with.

I've been getting this issue as well. I've noticed that it's when I'm saving/updating an existing file. When I delete the file from the folder it had been saved originally (with the project still open) and then try to save it again, it successfully saves without an error.

This is with CC2021 running Mac OS Big Sur 11.0.1

Exactly Syndee, I have the same situation. When a file fails to save it seems it's because it cannot delete the old version after it gets done saving. I usually find a temporary Photoshop file that has failed to disappear in the same folder as the file I'm tryin to save, if I delete that plus the original version of the file the open file saves every time.

I'm having the same problem when trying to save an existing file to Box server. Running Photoshop 22.0.1 on Catalina. It only happens with Photoshop. (I also use Illustrator, InDesign, and Premiere Pro and do not have this problem occur with those apps.)  I started maybe 5 months ago. I save to my desktop and then upload to Box, but what a pain it's been to have to do that.

@sherr_cordova
I didn't find any fix there, reinstalling or def res is not a solution (the problem appears later again) - btw its a different topic as there's no error msg popup.

The problem appeared after the todays update... again :( My colleague at work has the issue for last 2 months, I got it today for the first time, probably 'cos of the update.

For me hiding layers helps to save the project, then close and reopen to save with layers visible. No need to restart or create new files for each save, just hide all layers and save to the original file ctrl+s... not a solution either, but better than start over while no other way of "save/export" was working.

Not sure if this helps solving the bug, but hiding text layers only helps to save the file.

I just fixed mine using a work-around someone posted on Reddit:
"Then I decided to try switching my mode from 8 bits/channel to 16. I was able to save it. Then I converted it back to 8 and I had no issues after that."

This worked for me, hopefully can work for others!

Hi all... just updated to Big Sur and I've been having the same Photoshop Program Error with a large file with many layers. I read a tip on Reddit -
HIDE THE LAYERS
Just create one folder for layers and hide them. Then save as normal. This worked for me.

Camille thank you! I've been having these same issues and did what you said. It saved once I switched to 16, but then when I inserted additional pdfs into the file, switched back to 8 and tried to save again it would not. Then I switched to 16 again and it saved. This issue is so incredibly frustrating and I'm on a deadline so hoping there are others like you that provide work-arounds! Thank you

It seems switching to 16 bit mode is the only way to save my photoshop files but then they are huge due to all the content I bring in. Please say there is a fix after the 7 months of posts I see below. I was having the issue with 2020 earlier today and just updated to 2021 and am still having the issues in 8 bit mode. Thank you

I'm experiencing the same issue. It's seriously annoying. There are a couple of things that have worked for me. I have deleted files, emptied my bin etc and then tried saving, sometimes this works. I have also purged PS (edit - Purge - all) and this has helped. This will remove all previous versions of the file saved so only do if you don't need to revert. Finally, I was working on a file today and nothing I tried working. I tried different file names, different file types, different file locations, deleting EVERYTHING I could from my machine and nothing. I eventually Force Quit PS, opened it again and saved the recovered file. This worked for me thankfully.

Adobe, this is in fact a common issue. The OP is not the only one experiencing it. Please fix this bug, it's extremely frustrating.

I'm on a 2017 iMac Pro. Using Big Sur, and PS 22.1.0.

I am experiencing the same problem with saving, and this trick of turning all the layers off works for me too. Very weird.

I was surprised to see how long people have struggled with this problem. I encountered the error for the first time yesterday. I recently updated to version 22.1.0 on my Windows 10 machine.  As others have found, hiding layers has allowed me to save my work.  I then added back each layer and saved successfully until I found that a single fill layer caused the problem.  We need this fixed ASAP.

This happens to me on macOS Catalina 10.15.7 using latest Photoshop 22.1. It also happened on the prior version of Photoshop, was hopeful this was patched in the latest but it isn't.

Apparently my workaround is to save locally, as I was trying to save directly to a Google Shared Drive when I would get the error.

This really needs to be fixed, as our workflow is saving directly to a Google Drive.

I had this problem a moment ago and it was because of one layer. When i hid that layer it saved. I then copied the content to another layer and deleted the original layer to save it with every layer visible.

Hi everyone, I thought I would just post what I did to solve this error that just occured for me as well, in the hope it helps someone else. You can scroll to the end to see what eventually worked for me but I'd recommend trying everything as it was not clear what caused the issue in the first place, so what worked for me might not work for you. I am using a fully updated creative cloud version of Photoshop. So if you aren't I would recommend checking that first.

At first I suspected that this might have been caused by a windows "saving backup" prompt I had clicked on whilst photoshop was open thus freezing photoshop, but I ruled that out I believe since I couldnt see anything on windows side running. I also closed everything but photoshop and this help thread.

I tried turning off the different options suggested earlier in the thread which had no effect, I also increased my ram usage from 60% to 75% (22,469) but that didnt help. I tried a ctrl shift escape in order to see if I had missed any background process that might be interfering with photoshop or if it had frozen but nothing seemed to be interfering; so I resorted to restarting photoshop and losing work in the process :/ Id recommend doing a copy merge save so you can paste any changes to your reopend file (of course I thought of that after I closed photoshop ha)

After restarting I was still getting the same error, so I tried a "save as" with a different file name but despite saying it worked, the file itself didnt show up (I save everything to an external usb connected 4tb harddrive and 1tb ssd, the file itself is a very large Illustration at 1.98gb ). I checked all my connections but it was all fine and still wouldnt save.

In the end after a second photoshop restart and going through all the settings once more to make sure I hadnt changed something inadvertently, I managed to fix the issue by going to Image - Mode and changing the channel option to 16 bits channel (was 8) I tried saving when it was 16 bits but I got the same error, so I then changed it back to 8 bits (may take a few seconds to convert, changing to any of the other channels I think would get the same result) and tried saving again which for some reason seemed to fix the problem.

Had this not worked I would of tried changing the colour mode to something else and then back to see if that reset the issue. If that doesnt work you could try restarting your computer in safe mode, and lastly, the final resort would be a clean install of photoshop.

This fix does not work on Mac OS Big Sur. When I get this error, I cannot even to an Option-Merge Visible which has nothing to do with saving to the disc. I have 64 GB RAM.

Just adding my 2 cents, as I also encountered this issue of being unable to save today.

I am an infrequent PS user. Win10 / Photoshop Version: 22.1.0 20201125.r.94  This is the first time I'm using PS since updating to this version.

My PSErrorLog.txt does not seem to have any entries from today.

Save/Save as gives the "program error" message.  Export gives "an unknown error occurred".

The hint in a previous comment above about Layers helped me.  I turned off all Layers, except the Background, and then was able to save / save as.

Turning the Layers on, one-by-one, I found the culprit.  When this culprit Layer is visible, the saving error occurs.  This particular Layer was copy-pasted from a different window in this PS session.

In a bit more detail:

In Lightroom, on Image1 (offending image), I right-clicked to Edit in PS 2021.

Similarly for Image2 (background image), I again Edit in PS - giving me two windows in PS.

In PS, after using the Object Selection Tool and some Adjustment Layers on Image1, I copy-paste it on top of the background Image2 (as a new Layer).

After adding other Layers and effects to Image2, I tried saving, and.....error!

With the offending Layer visible, Merge/Flatten Layers gives the error: "Could not complete your request because of a program error."

Hope that helps.

---

UPDATE: my subsequent workaround was to open the offending image as a Layer in my main document, using File > Place Embedded.

To everyone, ive cured this but its NOT a fix. I uninstalled Photoshop - making sure all my files were safe and reverted to an older version from September - all looks the same to me, so I've no idea what the updates were but im back up as normal using an older version. Its NOT a fix but when you have deadlines to meet, its a great get out.

having the same issue.  mac pro 2019.  Like what DerekBez says - if you turn off all layers and save, it works.  this is pretty terrible. i'm using a 16 bit file.  maybe that has something to do with it? first time with this issue in over 15years with Photoshop.

I am getting the same problem and it's also happening when I attempt to merge layers. It's causing major disruption to my workflow.

I have posted here before, having read the recent posts I feel it might be helpful if I shared what I found again. First I never tried flattening the layers or changing modes or caring about the content of the file. First because I need to keep my files in layers, in the mode I want and with the content I want. Messing with the content of the file is a non-starter for me and it should be for all of you too! IMHO. What my experimenting has led me to believe is that Photoshop cannot save the file because it cannot remove the previous version from the drive. For me I was always able to save the file to a different location than that of the files location when I opened it. Meaning for me I could save the file on a local drive where it never existed but not save the file on the NAS drive where the file lived when I opened it. One other person posting has noted if while the offending file is open you go to the location of the file that is open and move the original copy to the trash the file can successfully saved to it's original location. If there exists a temporary Photoshop file in that location with a file name with a long number delete that file as well. For me changing the default connection to my NAS drive from SMB to AFP seems to have solved the problem. Whatever the solution one would think that Adobe would have a presence on this forum and at least acknowledge that the problem exists. I understand that creating software that runs on different platforms of different ages is a very complex undertaking and problems are bound to come up but this is obviously effecting a great number of users and whether it is an Adobe problem or an Apple problem or a Microsoft problem Adobe should at least acknowledge it exists.

@andor:  I think you may well be onto something with that observation! Yes, Adobe does monitor this forum, and undoubtedly will pick up on your idea! Believe me, they ARE acutely aware of this discussion...  I also wonder whether a NAS drive might be part of the equation. I seem to have noticed reference to NAS drives in this and the other 16 page long related thread about save issues.

It looks like a different problem to me, though perhaps related.  By turning off the visibility of an "offending" layer, I can save over an existing psd file.

I've been experiencing this issue on Windows 10, with PS 2021, both fully up to date. I've been circumventing the problem using the flip from 8 to 16 bit colour, and then back, which generally works. However it's pretty time consuming with the size of files I'm working with.

I've just tried something else, which has resolved the problem twice when it occurred on two different files. I used crop tool to crop the drawing to the existing canvas and thus delete all information outside the bounds of the canvas. Not sure how reliable this will be for anyone else, but it seems to have saved my bacon on this occasion.

With the amount we're now paying for these programs, this error should have been addressed by now. I'm having the same issue 5 months after the original post and it's a program error, it has nothing to do with user error. On top of that i was also unable to convert layers to smart objects or rasterize. Really annoying.
