Photoshop: "Can't make eraser from last brush used" Why can't I just save an update to a brushes settings?

I'm painting with a brush it has certain brush settings and texture.

I switch to the eraser

The eraser now uses that same brush, texture and settings I was using to paint a second before with but NOW it erases instead of paints.

Adobe destroyed this seemless workflow... now makes us jump through hoops to change the eraser brush.  Now if you switch to your eraser you get some standard preset or some brush that is totally different then the one you had just used.

Half the time it doesn't even work when I try to change my eraser brush.  When I select a brush having the eraser tool selected , (say I want to make a Kyle Brush into an eraser) it snaps back to the brush tool.  What the hell is going on?

Useless, unusable and frustrating as hell.  Please change it back to the way it was.  The new interface has become an eye sore also.. there are too many ways of viewing brushes, and it adds to the confusion.

Also Why can't I just save an update to a brushes settings?   ToomBoom has this feature. But in Photoshop I have to create a new brush every time and then go back and delete old brushes.  How long do we have to wait for something so logical and basic?

I have the same problem.  If I try to use a grunge brush as an eraser it keeps switching to a paint brush.  Just started doing this, not sure if it was before or after this last update.

It is very frustrating.

There is a work around to adobe's blunder. set your brush mode to" clear" and make sure you are on a regular layer (not background). this still doesnt change the fact that the eraser too is effectively useless.

Clear is greyed out in my brush mode.
