Photoshop: Arrow key's stop working in type tool / text in CS6

When using a type/text area in PS my keyboard arrow key's sometimes just stop working. There's just no more feedback and I have to restart PS to 'fix' the problem. This is a very annoying bug which really degrades my productivity!

Please help!

Hey All-

I think someone had mentioned this before, but if you are experiencing this arrow/delete key issue and you quit and relaunch Safari, it fixes the problem.

Very strange, but that is how I have fixed it. Will tell you how long it lasts if I find out.

Cheers. JC

I never use Safari, so doubt it's linked to it specifically but maybe it's more of a general webkit thing as I use Chrome.

To confirm this thought, I just got the problem while Chrome was open. I closed Chrome and went back to the paragraph text area in PS (while it was still in "edit" mode) and the issue had disappeared.

How about if you turn GPU off in preferences?
Photoshop > Preferences > Performance > Uncheck "Use Graphics Processor" > restart application.

I know 100% it is not a problem with browsers. We do have another machine in the studio and when we installed a custom font (Helvetica Neue Pro LT), it started having issues with the cursor keys like my machine. We uninstalled that font thinking we cracked the problem, but the problem persisted on that machine, which never had the cursor issues before. Something weird going on, now both machines have same issue with cursors and delete not working sometimes when editing text in paragraph text layers. I'll try turning off the GPU as above and work today then post again, standby.

Changing fonts around in Lion just to make CS6 work properly isn't really a professional solution, as this may affect other programs.

Please note the URL of the link; this is not an Adobe bug...

No conflict, and I've removed the custom version.

Will this bug ever be fixed? It's slowing down my work flow as a UI designer incredibly, I'm expected to type stuff into Photoshop daily. Please don't make this an OSX problem, it's a CS6 problem. I can't use arrow keys or delete keys.

Hi Hawken and Andrew,

We're quite happy to fix the bug if we can get solid steps to reproduce it. Unfortunately, each time I've worked with users on similar issues, it's been either unreproducible or user error or a device (such as Wacom Intuos5) or a companion app (Wacom sidecar app) or a font (Helvetica Neue) or another application stealing focus. If you have a clear case, we'd be HAPPY to help get to the bottom of the problem. We can share your screen via an Internet-hosted connect session and solve the problem or at least get a good idea as to the cause.

Meanwhile, useful information includes:
* what were you doing -- precise steps are REALLY helpful, such as:
1) launch PS
2) monkey around with blur filters
3) create many layers of type
4) switch between apps
etc
* what other applications you have running at the same time and if you've switched between them (I can't say enough that there is a setting for some tablets that EATS keystrokes -- see many other, similar threads). Please note multiple users with the problem have posted that closing Safari and/or Chrome fixes the problem...
* what other devices you have running on your system, such as points, tablets, unusual keyboard layouts, etc.

Just like a doctor or car mechanic, we need detailed data to figure out what's wrong. We hear you're frustrated, but without a detailed list of symptoms and things you've been doing (or running) we can't really narrow down the cause.

Thanks,
David

Count me among the people who also have this frustrating, annoying and bizarre bug. Quite often, creating a text box, typing some text in it, and then trying to use the Left Arrow to go backwards to correct something shows nothing happening. Select All and clicking Left Arrow to jump to the start of the text also does not work.

Howdy Imran,

Did you read the previous comments? Are you running Chrome? Are you using a Magic Mouse? Have you checked your third-party pointer/mouse/keyboard utilities. We've heard about this problem several times, but each time the cause has been one of these. If you have clear steps indicating Photoshop, however, we'd be happy to walk through it with you.

Thanks,
David

David, I never used Chrome, do not have a Magic Mouse and no other utilities. An email I got today from Photoshop Family says the (apparently verified) bug is fixed so I will try that. Thanks.

PS Did anyone else experience that this web site was horrid to login to post this comment. I logged in with my previously registered ID, nothing happened, I had to refresh the page, repost (copy paste as I thankfully copied the text) tried with FaceBook login, which just sat there, and finally on a third attempt, was told a verification code would be sent to me... which took 10 minutes to arrive! I used that and even that refreshed the page to erase the text I had written. Had I not copied it already I would have had to type in the text again, which would be a pain if it was significantly longer.

I'm also having the EXACT same problem.

Brand new machine, MBP running Mountain Lion.

First time ever using CS6, first PSD from scratch in CS6, noticed this problem right away while running a bunch of other crap.

Went back, tested, closing things arbitrarily and tested again to reproduce the problem. I was able to see the problem go away by some of the following: >> Closing Firefox, Closing Microsoft programs, Saving the File within PS CS6,

Short of it is this: it's not consistent.

I can boot up from dead, with a couple of things running in the background. Dreaded Symantec Antivirus. A Novell client for some shared drives. That's it. And still reproduce the problem while running only Photoshop.

A sequence of operations that I've performed to BOTH produce it and not produce it: >>

Open Recent> select file
Move tool> Select Text Box Layer
Nudge>Keyboard Arrow Up>nudge nudge nudge
"T" Text Tool
Click Select anywhere in the same text box.
Keyboard arrow to Navigate the Paragraph is non responsive. Cursor remains still.

Sometimes I may change the leading or kerning on a line of text and then try to unselect it by the arrow key, and it will have become non-responsive.

Sometimes the behavior will appear only after I've selected several text boxes and modified text at least one of them.

The font for this file is, indeed, Helvetica Neue, but it came with the install, I thought? It's also the standard publication font for my work, so, I can't delete it. Nor can I disable Symantec. Nor can I downgrade from Mountain Lion.

I have an NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M Graphics Processor, which I disabled, by unchecking the GPU box. But I can still reproduce the problem and it sucks.

My personal workaround is going to be InDesign, for whatever I do next with heavy text, with the hope that this problem is limited to PS and not CS6 broadly.

Howdy Jason,

Just so you know, there have been some problems with various tablet devices on Mountain Lion, the version of Helevtica Neue which ships with the OS has had some problems, and Chrome can trigger keyboard interception as can other programs which "sit on top"/go semi-modal or monitor input. That said,
I'd like to follow up with you via a connect session, so we can get to the bottom of your problem. If we can isolate it within Photoshop, then we can fix it otherwise hopefully we can figure out a workaround.

Thanks,
David

I've read all the comments and have exactly the same problem. However, I've had CS6 installed for quite a while now and the bug only just started appearing after I uninstalled an old version of Growl. No idea if this is the cause or helpful at all?

It's interesting that you mention that, Anders. I've work with two users yesterday alone that had Growl installed.... Hmmm....

Thanks,
David
