Photoshop: Ability to increase opacity of layer beyond 100%

I'm missing the possibility to raise the opacity of a layer to more than 100%.
Sometimes, if I paint a shadow or some other details, I want to add just a little bit more. Now I'm solving this by duplicating layer and lower the duplicated layers opacity to preferred look.
Same for adjustment layer, a quick doubling of your curves adjustment layer could then be done by adjusting opacity to 200%.

The request does not seem to make sense to me as of necessity 100% is the maximum opacity.

If you wanted to edit the transparency (sometimes also called »alpha«) of a Layer (with Adjustment Layers or Smart Filters) independently from the pixel’s RGB-(or CMYK- or Lab-)values that would seem to be another issue.

Another workaround could be applying Layer > Layer Mask > From Transparency and the editing the Layer Mask (with Curves for example).

Thanks for reply, what I mean is if you paint with a brush in 25% opacity on a layer in 100%. You can't change that brushstroke later on to be 50%.
Unless you duplicate the layer.
If there was a possiblity to adjust the layers opacity to more than 100% this would be much easier and prevent a messy layer structure.
