Photoshop 22: Pinch To Zoom on Macbook Slow When Using Clone Stamp

Just updated to PS 2021 and wish I hadn't.

I'm using a MacBook Pro 16" and I use the touch surface on a Magic Mouse to scroll around the image and the trackpad on the MacBook to pinch zoom in and out. This is all fine until I start using the Clone Stamp tool. As soon as I've used the tool a few times, when I pinch to zoom in and out on the image, the zoom is really laggy/jerky/unresponsive. Painful to use. This was smooth as anything in the version I was using right before this update. Switching to another tool, such as Marquee, zoom is lovely and smooth again but then back to laggy when I switch back to Clone Stamp.

Is it a known issue and is there a fix? (I tried changing all the GPU acceleration settings to no avail).

Can I roll back until there is a fix? (Guessing not).

Thanks in advance.

Hi Vof,

I'm not able to reproduce this with 16" MacBook Pro using the track pad. I was cloning and panning, and pinching and zooming on a 8-bit RGB image that is 2863px x 4256px.

What does your file look like in terms if size, bit depth, # of layers etc. Does it happen with all files?

Hi Jeffrey,

Thanks for looking into this. I was editing a TIF file of size 5101 x 3408 pixels, 16-bit RGB of approx 105Mb file size (it's a scan of 35mm film). I was also editing a similarly sized 16-bit grayscale TIF of approx  35Mb file size. Same issue on both; pinch to zoom is nice and smooth until I start cloning, whereby it becomes very jerky and not nice to use.

The images are also stored on the MacBook internal SSD drive, not an external drive.

I didn't try regular JPGs and I've rolled back to the previous version now, which is working just fine.

Ah, inconsistent issues are the worst.

Strange. I tried a bigger file in 16-bit - still smooth as butter after cloning. Only thing I can think to try with the new version is to try restoring your preferences using this manual method:
